The primary objective of journalism is supposed to be telling the truth. It is a DECISION on the part of USA Today to know that new details have emerged about this case and to refuse to update an old story that is still circulating and still shaming Jane Doe.

I'm not linking the piece because I'd like for as few people to read it as possible. I'm writing about it here because: - I want to be clear about what happened to anyone who saw that article and felt betrayed to see me associated with it. - These are bad decisions that deserve public shame.

Science shows medication abortion could be offered more widely. And support for and interest in over-the-counter abortion pills is high. Spread the word and follow us for more updates on MiMi. #MiMi4All

This incident (not isolated, BTW) was part of why I was unsurprised to see health systems capitulating and allowing I C E access to patients admitted to wards/units. The criminalization of disabled and chronically ill patients is ripe ground for further violations of patients' privacy and rights.

My best friend died an eminently preventable death after being ignored by doctors and nurses and accused of being a "seeker" (they had security toss her bags and throw out her medications). Turned out she had a pulmonary embolism.

We cannot solve the maternal health crisis without midwives—they are a key part of the solution in Georgia and nationwide. Yet under Georgia law, they are treated like criminals. That’s why we’re suing. https://bit.ly/48DsbOm

Black women in Georgia turn to midwives for safer births – so why does the state criminalize many of them?

A new lawsuit seeks to decriminalize the work of midwives banned from providing care amid a worsening maternal health crisis

It seems to me like a lot of people haven't followed the details of why folks have issues with Substack, and basically assume that leaving the platform for moral or social reasons just automatically means giving up money. But I don't think that's supported by the actual math.

There's a lot of talk about leaving Substack & whether it will be the death-knell of your newsletter. I have been on Beehiiv for 7 months now & @tlpavlich.gay helped me run some numbers. So, was leaving Substack worth it? The answer, for me, has been a resounding "yes." Here are the hard numbers:

Cherise Doyley, a mother of three, was in labor at a Florida hospital when she had to attend a virtual court hearing to decide how she'd give birth. Doyley had no lawyer or advocate — no one to explain to her what, exactly, was going on. Read our full investigation: propub.li/3PRyLuf

There are at least three major news stories about sexual assault and abuse of power by men in prominent positions this week. Government, labor, academia; the culture is everywhere, and women disproportionally bear the weight of the consequences. If this week feels extra heavy, be kind to yourself.

There are reports of ICE activity on the north side of Chicago happening now. Please share so people in the area can be aware and take precautions. If you’re in the area please come by our office at 7016 N Clark St for ICE whistles. We protect each other. Chinga la migra.

KNOW YOUR RIGHTS
WHEN INTERACTING WITH IMMIGRATION OFFICERS (ICE)
• If you believe you are witnessing ICE activity, please call ICIRR's 24-Hour Family Support Hotline at 1-855-HELP-MY-FAMILY (1-855-435-7693).
• If you find yourself interacting with an ICE officer in any location including your workplace, or out in the community, remember:
• You have the right to remain silent when questioned or arrested by immigration officers
• You should remain calm and keep your hands where the officer can see them.
• You can state that you wish to speak with an attorney.
• You are not required to
• Discuss your immigration or citizenship status with the police, immigration agents, or other officials
• Sign anything you do not understand.
• If an officer knocks on your door at home:
• You have the right to not open the door.
• ICE officers must have a warrant signed by a judge to enter your home. ICE
"warrants" are not signed by judges; they are ICE forms signed by ICE officers and they do not grant authority to enter your home without your consent
• If you are outdoors and think you see immigration officers nearby:
• You can move to a safe indoor space
• If you are a U.S. citizen and feel safe to do so, you can record the activity with your phone or write down any relevant information about what you witness— ALWAYS being careful to not interfere or otherwise obstruct the operation
• DO NOT:
• Post unverified information on social media
• Interfere with the investigation or otherwise put yourself in harm's way
