Holy hell. What the absolute fuck. I literally dealt with this situation my senior year of high school because a teacher was lusting after my girlfriend who was a junior. In high school. And then his wife found out.

Max Miller story is providing incredible cover for the 65 year old NC Republican congressman who was just found to have been texting his female staff shit like "I had to leave the party because you brought your bf with you 🥺"

They think they're being clever eugenicists by saying that people with "underlying health issues" don't matter, but >75% of U.S. adults have a chronic condition (including 60% of age 18–34). So what they're really saying is "nobody matters, it's okay if everybody dies from inadequate regulation."

The New York Times@nytimes.com · 2d ago

Breaking News: Two deaths in Michigan have been linked to cyclospora. Both people who had the parasite also had underlying health issues.

If you believe this, and I hope you do, there is nothing stopping you from continuing to protect your vulnerable neighbors by wearing masks in crowded and indoor spaces, especially necessary spaces like healthcare facilities, grocery stores, and public transportation. Absolutely nothing.

Covid lockdowns demonstrated, in a deeply imperfect way, the possibility of large-scale social solidarity for a higher cause. That is a prime reason why so many powerful people want us to run screaming away from them into the comforting arms of selfish individualist competition.

It is funny that this person thinks “immigrants defended the union while native born whites sought to destroy it in the name of slavery” is an argument against immigrants being Americans. This is precisely the point, nothing about being born here makes you better bsky.app/profile/aphc...

Another datapoint for the fascist radicalisation of institutional pillars of much of the American Right

As a PSA: In the last week, two people I know got tricked by scam websites that used AI to replicate the websites of real businesses they had bought things from in the past.

O’Neal helped purge me & all the other Black full-time staff columnists at the Post Opinion Section. I challenged his move to fire me in the aftermath of the Charlie Kirk killing. And he testified against me in June. We are expecting an arbitration ruling soon. Convenient time for him to quit.

New: Washington Post Opinion editor Adam O’Neal is leaving, he announced in an internal memo Friday

Just want to remind folks that this keeps happening. Burials of assumed-important ancients discovered to be women via genetic testing, after decades of them simply being assumed to be male. The patriarchy is incompatible with reality.

Jens Notroff@jensnotroff.com · 6d ago

The #BronzeAge #UptonLovellShaman's burial in Wiltshire has long been considered an important religious figure & metalworker. It's been barely questioned someone of such status must be male. But now #aDNA analysis revealed that the body is in fact: a woman. 🏺 www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

Let's keep our eyes on Nolan Wells. This young man deserves our remembrance & his family deserves our support. It seems only Black people nationally, Mississippi, & Ms Rachel care. But you all should know hearts hurt over this. If you want to know what's on the minds of Black America, it's this.

Ashton Pittman@ashtonpittman.bsky.social · last wk.

I wish everyone approached the Nolan Wells story with the care Duvalier Malone does. Care for truth. Care for the grieving family. Care for the grieving friends. Care for the history of mistreatment that informs Black Mississippians distrust of the system. It's all the above.

People who are suddenly deported to countries they haven’t been to for years — or, in some cases, have NEVER been to — are incredibly vulnerable. We are going to be reading stories like this for years. God have mercy on their three little girls.

“If immigration hadn't picked up my brother, my sister-in-law would still be alive, and the children wouldn't be going through this sorrow,” he said. “Unfortunately, immigration — the [U.S.] government — doesn't see that. It makes no difference to them.” www.stlpr.org/law-order/20...

so I just want to emphasize something here that non-media people might not pick up on: Marisa is an independent journalist and is taking on the risk of being sued by Moraff here without any institutional backing. That's admirable bravery - and also means being very, very certain of the facts.

Exclusive from me — Daniel Moraff, one of the political operatives behind Graham Platner's rise and fall, has been accused of sexual assault. Full story here:

While we are in this Greek Mythology moment, may I remind you that Emma Thompson is adapting Pat Barker’s take on The Iliad, and she’s struggled to get it made bc the focus on what acts of war against women and survival thereafter actually look like (the core of Barker’s narrative) is too intense.

Emma Thompson adapting feminist retelling of Iliad for big screen

The actress told the Hay Festival she is writing a film version of Pat Barker’s The Silence of the Girls to draw attention to sexual abuse in war zones

this is officially one of my favorite P&P adaptations and if you haven't read it yet I am honestly jealous that you still can discover it for the first time

For anyone who ever wants to read (or re-read) @trungles.com's Pride & Prejudice readthrough commentary w/o having to slog through needing to constantly expand the original thread, I put it all together on a google doc! 135 glorious pages! 💙📚 docs.google.com/document/d/1...

Fox News poll: Which political party -- the Democrats or the Republicans -- do you think would do a better job on immigration? 50% say Democrats 49% say Republicans *Quite* a turnaround after Dems got destroyed on immigration politics in 2024; it is (was?) Trump’s best issue.

I wrote a report on the correlation between this type of sex "education" and the rates of teen pregnancy in the state of Idaho when I was 17 years old and presented it to legislators (spoilers: much higher rates of pregnancy, infections, violence). Just love to see that we are right back here wheeee

Suppressing birth control information (for girls), scaremongering about masturbation (for boys), it’s the kind of sex ed that Anthony Comstock stood for until his dying day (in 1915)
