Pretty much everyone calls the next Smash game "Smash 6," but Sakurai considers 3DS and Wii U to be separate entries, so it's also the seventh one. Smash 6-7.

It’s something that wasn’t even possible. We’re now going into versions four and five within the series—this is only something that’s now possible. Kotaku: When you say four and five, do you mean the 3DS and Wii U versions? Those are separate? Sakurai: Yeah, exactly.

In 2023, I posted about a bizarre Dolce & Gabbana shirt featuring Mario standing in a beam of light alongside text praising him. I have tracked down the source of the image, which was a splash page in the E3 2000 brochure. Now the venerated Mario can be seen in high quality.
