excellent piece by @mirandayaver.bsky.social in @statnews.com on how health insurers use administrative burdens to "ration by inconvenience" require prior auth, deny claims -- "it's ok because they can appeal" but the appeal process is daunting, confusing, takes a ton of time and effort etc
Miranda Yaver@mirandayaver.bsky.social · 2y agoI wrote this based on my JHPPL article on inequitable administrative burdens of appealing coverage denials, incorporating a new interview I did with a doc who reviews claims for a major insurer and who said, "We’re told denying things is OK because people can appeal" www.statnews.com/2025/01/23/h...
not only are insurers effectively not liable for administrative burdens they place on patients an physicians as obstacles to care, but they are also incentivized by short-term savings even if it has long-term higher spending because they know people change insurance with jobs, age into medicare etc

One of the things that I try to highlight in my broader book project (forthcoming) is the ways that these processes can undercut cost containment goals when pts experience exacerbations.
