Today is Sweden's National Day. The new citizenship law will go into effect today. This means ~100,000 pending applications citizenship applications will likely be rejected, an act of quasi-retroactive law making. A sad day for Sweden.

The Swedish Parliament rejected transitionary rules for citizenship applications. This is a devastating decision for thousands of people who have waited 24+ months for their citizenship to be processed. A horrible precedent that stains Sweden's reputation as a country with a strong rule of law.

Ignoring the obvious issues of creating a tiered system of punishment, stripping citizenship as a punishment isn't effective because people can just renounce their non-Swedish citizenship. All it does is chip away at the rule of law and weaken the value of citizenship.

The Swedish 🇸🇪 Parliament just approved a law that would create a tiered citizenship scheme, with a 1st class (mostly for the native born) that cannot be revoked and a 2nd class (mostly for the naturalized) that can: www.svt.se/nyheter/inri... Only two parties (Left and Green) voted against.

The new V-Dem report was released today. There are dramatic declines in democracy in the US. Much worse than during Trump I.

V-Dem v.16 is now released, w. updated scores for 2025. Most countries remain stable from 2024, but some clear improvements (on diff’t democracy indices), incl. S. Korea, Sri Lanka & Mauritius. Largest declines came, by far, in the US. This figure shows 10-yr changes on the Liberal Dem. index.

Europe hates Trump. But as things stand, by 2030 there will be MAGA-adjacent governments in France, Italy, Spain and the UK, while they can't be ruled out in Poland, Portugal, the Netherlands and any number of smaller central and Eastern European states. Maybe Europe doesn't hate Trump *that* much.
