Asylum Matters

Campaigning collaboratively, locally and nationally, to transform asylum in the UK.

Tragedies like this should not be normalised. This news comes just days after four people tragically lost their lives in the Channel. Until safe routes are available, people will be forced to take dangerous journeys. Our thoughts are with everyone on board. 📣 Safe routes, NOW.

All passengers thought to have been taken to Boulogne after large air and sea rescue operation by France and UK

This is not only tone deaf but actively dangerous language given 7 people were killed trying to cross the Channel in the last week, while French police attacked people on the beaches with tear gas. Borders kill. People need the same, safe routes as everyone else www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2026...

Burnham to be ‘relentless’ on small boat crossings after Ceuta crisis

Prime minister says UK needs to ‘bring back that control’ and safe routes for refugees are necessary to tackle trafficking

Even Home Office's own analysis shows tougher measures force more people into longer, more dangerous routes and exploitation. Tackling smugglers starts with ensuring people don't have to use them. Meanwhile, Labour's own policies mean more people are forced to use them. www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

Burnham pledges to be 'relentless' in curbing small boat crossings

The prime minister says enforcement is increased but there also need to be more safe routes into the UK.

Gesturing at safe routes while boasting of increasing enforcement shows our new PM doesn't yet understand the reality of our deadly border. Real safe routes means ending exploitation with viable ways to safety for all who need them - not picking out a select few while increasing danger for others.

Burnham vows to be 'relentless' on small boats crisis - and aims a dig at rivals

Andy Burnham pledged to get a grip on the numbers of people making the perilous Channel crossing - but said safe routes were needed to tackle vile smuggling gangs

Our thoughts are with the loved ones of four people who died this week trying to reach safety in the UK. We don't know their names or what their hopes were for life in the UK. But we know they deserved better. And we know their deaths must not be ignored. In their names, we must save future lives.

The fear and harm that racism is bringing into our communities has not only been ignored but, too often, fuelled by successive Governments. Andy Burnham must do better. We're very proud to have joined this urgent call for a national anti-racist strategy.

From widespread racist violence, to attacks on places of worship and burning down homes and businesses of people of colour, our new Prime Minister is inheriting a country which is ripping at the seams.

A senior judge says Home Office has relied on 'hallucinated' AI evidence to deny claims for sanctuary. That's deeply concerning in itself - but it also raises fears about what happens if Government's bid to 'streamline' the appeals system & reduce the role of judges succeeds.

75 years ago, the world made a promise. The Refugee Convention was created in the aftermath of war to ensure that people fleeing persecution could find protection, safety, and dignity. For 75 years, it has saved lives across the world. Today, this promise is under attack. 1/3

The Refugee Convention has protected so many people over 75 years: but now it needs protecting. Refugee rights are under huge threat in the UK - with refugees now granted only temporary protection. Speak up for refugee rights now & send your MP a blueprint for a system that actually works:

For 75 years, the Refugee Convention has kept the promise of protection alive, offering a safe haven to millions of people forced to flee war, violence and persecution.

More than a legal document. A safe haven.

75 years after the Refugee Convention was opened for signature on 28 July 1951, it remains the foundation of the international refugee protection system and one of the most consequential international legal instruments ever adopted.

75 years on, the Refugee Convention remains a lifeline for millions

For years, people seeking sanctuary have paid the price as our leaders repeat the same mistakes: more hostility, more cruelty, and more waste. And one thing should be very clear to everyone: it isn’t working. We're proud to join 200+ refugee orgs in showing our new PM a better way is possible:

Hostility isn't working - and everyone can see it. Government after Government has tried making the asylum system crueller, and left it more broken than ever. But there's a better way. With 200+ refugee orgs, we've sent Andy Burnham a blueprint for a system based in both evidence and welcome.

A 'blueprint' with advice for how to base asylum policy on evidence, not cruelty, with a post it note stuck to it addressing to to Andy Burnham, from 300+ refugee charities. Advice includes lifting the ban on work and housing people in communities not camps

🚨 URGENT: The Government wants to expand yet another immigration detention centre - this one before it has even opened. A bigger detention estate means more harm to people and communities. But we can stop it. Follow @right-to-remain.bsky.social 's guide to taking action now:

Andy Burnham has renewed commitment to ending rough sleeping!👏✨🤞 But you can’t end rough sleeping without recognising the overlap with hostile immigration laws. If the PM is serious, he must scrap the hostile environment and recognise how cruel immigration policies contribute to rough sleeping. 💰➡️🩹🔥
