CESM Goes to Brazil! 🇧🇷 CGD’s Dave Lawrence led a CESM Tutorial at EarthSym 2026 in Maceió. 10 students stayed after to ask how CESM could fuel their research. Great to see CESM making an impact on the other side of the world. 🌎
When icebergs melt, oceans respond. 🌊 New research led by UC Davis and CGD suggests North Pacific iceberg melt may have helped weaken the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) during the last ice age. Read more: www.nature.com/articles/s41... #OceanScience #Paleoclimate #NSFNCAR
💡Ideas. 🤝 Collaboration. 🚀 Discovery. CGD scientists Isla Simpson and Stephen Yeager are mentoring the next generation at Rossbypalooza (July 20–31), guiding hands-on Earth system science research and discovery. More: lnkd.in/dcyYv7mX
A huge thank you to everyone who attended last week's CESM Tutorial! It was great to connect with new and familiar faces. Through lectures, hands-on CESM training, discussions with scientists, and networking, participants built a strong foundation in Earth system modeling. 🌎
Fact or fiction? Using disaster movies as a springboard, the next Explorer Series lecture with NSF NCAR’s Gokhan Danabasoglu and Aixue Hu will discuss the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation’s past, present & potential future behavior. 🗓️: Wed, July 15, 7-8:30 PM MT edec.ucar.edu/events/AMOC

I had an awesome time attending the CESM Workshop @ncar-cgd.bsky.social the past few days and presenting in the paleoclimate working group session! It’s amazing to see the different applications of CESM across topics and institutions. I’m so grateful for NCAR’s support of early career scientists! ⛰️🌎
Day 1 of the 2026 CESM Workshop brought inspiring talks, awards, working group discussions, and a lively poster session. Congratulations to Charlie Koven and Genevieve Clow on their CESM awards! Missed a session? Watch online: lnkd.in/gNncXvBy
Cheryl Craig has been sharing the story and impact of scientific computing with diverse audiences. Recently, she presented at the Loveland Museum, gave a keynote at the ISS Conference, and guest lectured in a CU Boulder atmospheric/oceanic sciences course. Great work, Cheryl!
The 31st Annual CESM Workshop is almost here! In-person registration closes June 5. Join us for plenaries by Duncan Watson-Parris & James Done, plus sessions on storytelling, ML, Earth system prediction & high-res CESM. Registration: www.eventsquid.com/mobileapp.cf...
🌎The 1st International Symposium on Earth System Modeling (#EarthSym) is coming up in Brazil, bringing together researchers to advance understanding of Earth’s interconnected systems. CGD scientists David Lawrence, Stephen Yeager, Yaga Richter, Meg Fowler & Maria Molina are participating.
NSF NCAR CGD scientists joined a Texas A&M workshop on high & ultra-high resolution Earth system modeling. As models sharpen from ~100 km to ~3 km, they can better capture regional detail & extremes but bring big scientific and computational challenges. Proud of our CGD scientists!
🌍 Learning from Machine Learning for Better Earth System Understanding 🗓 Apr 14, 2026 | ⏰ 3–4 pm MDT | Why do forecasts change weeks out? In this Explorer Series talk, Kirsten Mayer (CGD) shares how ML is improving subseasonal weather prediction and helping scientists understand forecast accuracy.
🌍 CGD scientist Dr. Yaga Richter shares in her TEDxBoulder talk how natural disasters are more connected than we think. She highlights Earth’s interconnected systems and calls for stronger collaboration, better science education, and cross-disciplinary solutions. www.youtube.com/watch?v=IqOr...
