Wanna know the link between increasing wildfires and the loss of grazing livestock? We just published an explanatory piece at the Dublin's Declaration substack. Munched or scorched - that's the destiny of landscapes evolved under disturbances dublindeclarationdesk.substack.com/p/why-the-wo...
Why the World will keep on Burning

I have had some interesting neighbors visit my front door over the years. Today we had a Praying Mantis visit, in 12025 H.E. a Porcupine visited, in 12024 H.E. a Blandings Turtle (an endangered species) literally knocked on our door, truly the most bizzare encounter #Wildlife #Rewild #WildlifeGarden
I heard rumaging in the front of the house, and I turned on the light and peeked through the window. I'm so glad I did not open the door! We do not have any food or food waste outside, with the exception of native gardening for #Wildlife #Porcupine #Deer /|\

Pumpkins are determined to tear down my fence. There are 3 of them hanging on in there: 2 orange, and 1 invisible green. They will pay for this, before the end of the month.
The final round of the federal Wildlife Crossings Pilot Program, which provides dedicated funding to build wildlife crossings, is now open! There's $80 million for projects that make roads safer, and applications are due Nov. 16. Learn more: simpler.grants.gov/opportunity/... 📷:NDOW

Restoration ecologists have long known that many ecosystems are so degraded that simply leaving them to recover naturally will not work Dispersal limitation, damaged substrate, excess nutrients, altered hydrology, etc mean active intervention is needed to recreate rich ecosystems in a timely way

In the Auca Mahuida Nature Reserve, guanacos migrate up the slopes of the Auca Mahuida volcano during the summer months. Here, researchers are interested in how ongoing oil development may be impacting the animals and how the broader population uses the landscape. www.cms.int/gium/migrati...

The clacking of white storks, galloping Exmoor ponies, the roar of red stags and the hooting of owls. Seeing the creatures here is only half the joy. The sound they bring to the landscape is magical to take in. There's nothing quite like hearing the chorus in person. Visit us this October.
The vegetation structures that herbivores shape are the ones that all flora and fauna are most adapted to. While it's very important to recognise these structures, it's probably more important to realise that in some places there are very few herbivores and in other places no herbivores at all.

Quite emotional to report that we've just found our amazing survivor Marsh Tit, still here in his ancient woodland kingdom. He's now 11 yrs 4 months old, survived the 2026 heatwaves/drought and smelt the wildfires of nearby Holme Fen. I ringed him in my 30s and I'm now in my 50s.
May 2015. David Cameron was Prime Minister, UK an EU member, Barack Obama was US President, and this male Marsh Tit hatched in Monks Wood. Colour-ringed 28 August 2015. Photo 2 April 2016. Observed every year since. @martamaziarz.bsky.social & I saw him again today, 10 yrs 5 mo old, still surviving.
Probably best I don't belong to an HOA. I enjoy transplanting weeds from my garden *into* my lawn, and I welcome moles to live in my wild yard. Moles are #ecosystem #engineers too, their tunnels aerate the soil and increase water infiltration and habitat complexity.
Also on the farm tour: this is likely the most massive trunk I've ever seen on a big-leaf maple (Acer macrophyllum). There are some ropes tied around in an effort to keep it from splitting. Pics don't do it justice; this tree is huge.
I grew up on a farm, so old farm architecture has taken a special place in my heart. Today I went on a farm tour and this 100 y.o. barn was a highlight. This beauty features an indoor wooden silo. These pics are from up in the loft.
Learned about European bison when they were re-introduced near me. Did not realise there were Mexican bison too! Same species as the one in Canada? Never knew they were found so far south. Great story of ecosystem recovery!

"Some Great Lakes sturgeon may be 400 years old. Scientists are rethinking how to save them"
Lake sturgeon belong to a lineage of fish that stretches back more than 150 million years — long before humans appeared. It was only relatively recently that their numbers collapsed, as habitat destruction and commercial fishing nearly wiped them out across the Great Lakes.
