NEW: DHS wants to pay private contractors bounties to hunt down people who already left the country, photograph their homes, and demand money. It told them leaving the US would wipe out fines. It was the pitch for self-deporting. Experts tell WIRED this is a pointless escalation of tactics.

First, and most importantly, anti-data center folks refuse to believe data center developers and tech companies engage in good faith. They have staked out a purely reactionary position. Negotiation is useless. Just reject everything by default. They're playing this as Always Defect.

I find it frustrating, personally, when anti-data center organizers say that the job creation is a myth. Because I think that 500 six-figure jobs, for folks who go through apprenticeships but maybe don’t need college degrees, that last two to six years — that’s enough time to build a family, that’s enough time to buy a home. I think it’s supermeaningful. And when I talk to technicians, when I talk to workers, clearly it was extremely meaningful work. One of the things that was the most surprising to me, when I talked to data center activists, was that they responded to so many of the pro arguments with: I don’t believe them. So this company says that they are going to treat the water with chemicals in it so that it doesn’t flow into the lakes. People would say: I don’t believe them. I don’t think they can do it.

In other Michigan news, the state looks set to elect it's first transgender lawmaker. Joanna Whaley won her Democratic primary and will compete in November for a state house seat, beating a primary opponent who tried and failed to disqualify her for not running under her deadname

Sometimes people call in with a thing that I can do but if you say like "I'm having trouble with..." then I'm going to tell you how to do it rather than doing it myself. But if you just say "can you...?" I'm not gonna ask you what you tried, I'll just do it.

One thing that AI really lays bare is how much "success" is just keeping up with the Joneses. If it looks like you're falling behind, even if you have a good reason, that appearance just compounds upon itself until you're forced to fail.

I would melt in the deep south. Not cause of the heat. I just had this conversation where the guy just kept like paying all these compliments, we're so happy about your org etc. etc. and I'm trying to reciprocate but I'm about to start saying shit like "and your ancestors were honorable"
