Newcastle Cycling Campaign

We are the Newcastle Cycling Campaign: we want a city with safe space for cycling so that people of all ages and abilities are able to choose to cycle.

Newcastle has a real opportunity to invest and develop this. But vocal opposition to cycle lanes is one of the biggest barriers in our way. How do we engage people who wouldnt consider themselves cyclists? How do we inspire people to move away from the car and try two wheels instead of four?

Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan@london.gov.uk · last wk.

Spot the difference. We didn't 5x the Cycleways network in London overnight. It took vision, hard work, & the conviction to invest in green infrastructure - often in the face of vocal opposition. In 2016, we had 90km of Cycleways. Now we're at 450km. That's progress. And we're not stopping there.

Graphic with the headline, “London’s cycle network is now five times larger than in 2016.” The upper map is labelled “BEFORE 2016” and shows London with a small number of bright green cycle routes concentrated around central London. The lower map is labelled “AFTER 2026” and shows London with many more bright green cycle routes extending across central and outer London.

Not acceptable. This route, as with all routes around the city, is used by people everyday. To close it with no warning isn't good enough. People going east-west could use Heaton Park View though that is a lot busier since the LTN was removed. People using Heaton Road will have no safe alternative.

Discovered a modal filter this evening. Full closure of the Strategic Cycle Route without so much as a warning. No diversion route.

Full closure of LTN1/20 poster boy.

It's our AGM next week. As well as the usual business we'll be hearing from Audrey Christie a Breeze ride leader who has featured in Cycling UK's 100 Women in Cycling list. Find out the details and register on the link. newcycling.org/2026/06/regi...

🗓️On 7th May local elections will be taking place in Newcastle. 📋We have put together three key points that we would like to see parties back in order to improve cycling in the city. 🗣️Ask the candidates you speak to what they will be doing to improve cycling in the city after May.

Cycling is quick, cheap and healthy. More cycling means less traffic congestion, and it's good for the planet. It's good for everybody! Here are three things Newcastle City Council could do to make it better for everyone:

Connected network - join together existing cycle lanes and tracks, so the routes are safe and easy for all
School streets - keep traffic away from school gates at the start and end of the school day, so its safer for children to travel by bike
Shopping locking - every parade of shops should have some bike stands, so you can lock and leave your bike while you go shopping

Ask your candidates what they think about these.
Let them know how important they are to you, and to your vote.

We would like to see every parade of shops across the city have cycle parking available so people can leave their cycle in confidence while shopping. Ask your election candidates if they will support better cycle parking at your local shops. Good for business, good for the city, good for cycling.

Large parts of Newcastle are reachable from the city centre by cycle – but only where a safe, connected and convenient cycle network exists. When you speak to candidates standing in the forthcoming elections ask them if they will be working towards a safe travel network for everybody.

The image is an Isocrone showing 15 minutes and 30 minutes cycling time from the centre of Newcastle upon Tyne. the 30 minute area covers the whole city.

📊 Newcastle has 1051.8km of roads, 1416.8km of footway, but only 36km of cycleway. 🚲 The city's safe cycling infrastructure is 3.42% the length of the road network. 🗣️ When you speak to candidates standing in next month's elections ask them if they support safe cycling for the whole city.

We have reported the fact the traffic lights at the end of the recently finished Pilgrim Street cycle lane at the junction with Market Street don't appear to ever turn green. If you come across traffic signals that aren't working you can report them here: envirocall.newcastle.gov.uk/Request/Form...

Our annual blog on traffic crash injury in #Newcastle. In 2025 there were 3 fatalities, 114 serious injuries and 414 slight injuries on Newcastle’s roads, an average of 10 people injured every week. This is too high - we need action to create a Safe Pedestrian And Cycling Environment in Newcastle.

At last night's council meeting there was a motion on winter maintenance. An amendment to 'Investigate gritting those parts of major arterial pedestrian/cycle routes susceptible to freezing' was not passed, as more than half of those councillors present voted against it.
