Combating antisemitism and protecting democracy

A county commissioner in Colorado shared AI-generated images depicting Colorado Attorney General and Democratic gubernatorial candidate Phil Weiser with devil horns. The GOP nominee for governor, Victor Marx, endorsed the image in a reply.

The discussion of how pro-Israel PACs and SuperPACs are impacting elections is important. But the discourse often falls into troubling tropes and even outright antisemitism. Here is a guide on what those tropes are, why they’re wrong, and what you can say instead so your point isn’t undermined.

This is why we say that protecting democracy and opposing fascism and authoritarianism is a crucial part of fighting antisemitism. DHS’s ICE raids and unconstitutional attacks on civil liberties directly impacts the safety of all targeted groups, including Jews.

FEMA approved only 27% of 2025 Nonprofit Security Grant applications.
The agency said state administrative agencies and the extended DHS shutdown caused the lengthy delay in issuing the grants"

🧵 People have rightfully pointed out that this post by Palestinian-American writer Susan Abulhawa is just the antisemitic "Stab-In-The-Back” myth with an anti-Zionist paint job on it. But there’s a little more to it.

We are dismayed by the horrifying attacks on the Upper West Side in New York City earlier today, in which an Asian man and a Jewish man wearing a kippah were stabbed in broad daylight by an attacker who, according to reports, yelled "Allahu Akbar."

In the 9 years since Charlottesville, the antisemitism & white supremacy on display that weekend have moved from the fringes to the mainstream — normalized by political leaders & media voices. The NY Young Republicans’ Nazi problem is just a sad manifestation of that. Every leader must reject it.

After a report last fall exposed a racist group chat, Young Republican organizations across the country came under scrutiny. Now, a burner account that appears to have belonged to the NYYRC’s treasurer reveals the extent of the club’s far-right turn.

Yet another young Republican group is at the center of an antisemitism scandal. This time it’s the New York Young Republican Club, a nearly 2,000-member organization that has included Members of Congress among their ranks and hosted President Trump as its keynote speaker as recently as 2023.

Rep. Collins should respond to and condemn this blatant antisemitism from one of his advisors and family members - not wave it away by touting “support for Israel” while failing to even mention Jewish Americans at all.

Screenshot from the CNN article linked in the reply to this post.

"After a commenter on YouTube noted that his post had a note of “anti-Semitism and white nationalism that is disturbing,” Scheer replied, “There’s nothing wrong with White Nationalism.”

Collins’ campaign did not address CNN’s questions regarding Scheer and his comments across social media. In a statement, a spokesperson for Collins said, “Rep. Collins’ lifelong support for Israel is unquestionable and backed by his consistent record in Congress of standing up for Israel and her people.”"

Deploying a study that seems to funnel respondents to a preferred answer and then using that inflated number to claim Jews "overwhelmingly" support adopting a heavily disputed definition of antisemitism is a flawed approach at best and potentially damaging to the actual fight against antisemitism.

This is why we reject an immigration agenda built on fear, intimidation and force. Every loss of life at the hands of Trump’s ICE forces demands accountability and full transparency. As American Jews, we know the consequences when governments turn entire communities into targets.

ICE has shot and killed two people in less than a week, in Texas and in Maine. We know about this violence because it happened outside, where neighbors were there to witness it. We often do not find out what happens to those ICE abducts until much later, if ever.

Saying someone can only support Israel because they’ve been bought is a clear example of anti-Zionism crossing into antisemitism. We caution El-Sayed and all candidates to refrain from making reductive statements like these that rely on harmful canards.

Screenshot from a CNN article:
"Not opposing Israel, El-Sayed said, is proof of being captive to corporate dominance and afraid of AIPAC. El-Sayed recently told Semafor that Stevens “is a suit with a large AIPAC bank account, that’s it. I hope maybe they find some way to teach her how to string together two coherent sentences.”

Asked whether he believed that support of Israel could not be about money, El-Sayed told CNN, “Not if you’re a Democrat and you believe in human rights.” Asked whether one could be a Zionist and a progressive, he said, “Every definition of a Jewish state ends up in some articulation of illiberal values, every single one.”"

A new poll confirms that American Jews are united by a shared concern about antisemitism, but that consensus breaks down when it comes to where threats originate and how to address them. Nexus Center for Antisemitism Research took a closer look at the Jewish Voters Resource Center's latest survey.
