Senior Lecturer in Human Geography at the University of Brighton. I do research on 🏳️‍🌈LGBTQ communities, 🍑fatness, & the GBQ men's 🐻Bear subculture. Very gay.

As we have recently lost some of our amazing LBGTQ+ venues - I wanted to share some good news. The fabulous community hub, the Ledward Centre is now back open - such an important asset for our city and was great to drop in and see them over Pride weekend!

Image shows Sian, laughing with a member of staff, at the newly refurbished Ledward Centre in Brighton. She is stood across from a counter with cakes and coffee on.

UCU members at Brighton University face the threat of derecognition. We have called an emergency rally tomorrow at 1:15pm. It would be amazing to see as many #TUC26 delegates as possible in attendance. 58-67 Grand Parade, Brighton and Hove, Brighton BN2 0JY

Still astonished the Labour party were allowed to march in Manchester Pride given that they're both passively & actively presiding over the mass rollback of trans inclusion & healthcare. Have to wonder if they'd be allowed if they raised age of consent for homosex to 21 or eradicated HIV healthcare

Snapshots from one of my papers at European Geographies of Sexualities Conference 2026. I'm looking into the production of bears' temporary spaces & events, & how volunteer labour, organisational processes, and communication technology were essential to 'bear' both mainstream and LGBTQ space

📰 Today’s Sunday Times exposes just a fraction of the attacks on jobs in Universities. We know the true picture across the UK is even worse. With record student sign ups this situation is completely untenable. The government must intervene.

This table describes the level of job losses in several universities across the UK.

We have secured the future of the Trans Pride Centre! Thanks to the National Lottery Reaching Communities Fund, we have been awarded a grant of £121,278! This money is ringfenced to keep the rent paid, the lights on, and training for new volunteers covered for the next five years.

I've just heard that the BA/BSc Geography programme is to close at the University of Exeter’s Centre for Geography and Environmental Science (CGES) in Cornwall. This programme was made up of excellent modules with original and content, taught brilliantly—often with real innovation—by extremely 1/9

Granted I've only seen a tiny slice of Slovenia but I cannot believe how clean and litter-free Ljubljana and its surrounds are. In the UK these green and blue spaces would be covered in garbage, with overflowing bins and every river full of human shit.

Today university fees rise again, while thousands of academics across the country face job cuts, crushing workloads and shattered morale. Students deserve better than this broken system of unfair repayment that widens inequality. Abolish fees and fund universities properly!

Currently in Slovenia - specifically Ljubljana - for my first proper holiday in 10 years (!). Hoping to hike around Golovec, Bled, and Bohinj over the next week, but the 35° weather may do for me 🔥

Love to Berlin Pride / CSD and Berlin's queer communities 🏳️‍🌈 Straight authorities simply love to say 'This was an attack on our society' - NO IT WASN'T. It was an attack on LGBTQ people *specifically*, he didn't drive a car into some policy think-tank did he

If I hear one more university leader say they're making "tough decisions" about redundancies or worsening our employment conditions, I will scream. They are not making tough choices, they're making the easiest decisions in the world. Tough decisions would be fighting the inevitability of job losses

Everyone read the end of it: "Governments in Scotland and Wales have finally realised that a viable, meaningful higher education sector needs greater oversight and control, and cannot be left wholly to the market. Now Westminster needs to wake up to this need for joined-up thinking"
