Just filed comments for DDOT’s ebike/scooter regs (N146433). If DDOT is going to require companies to limit speeds on sidewalks, companies should be required to share data with DDOT on sidewalk use and @ddotdc.bsky.social should be required to use that data to make improvements to bike lanes.

Turns out you can’t renew your DC drivers license online more than once in a row. The DMV website is not at all clear on this point, and when you go to renew online the way the system lets you know about this restriction is by throwing up a generic payment error at the last step in the process.

Google Maps really doesn’t want you to bike on 6th St NE and really does want you to bike on 2nd St NE. Which is weird. 6th is a pretty good route, while 2nd is not good for biking.

It's also not magic beans. It's a word predictor. It's really fast at it and it's even learned to pick the next line in code to make the code do what you want it to, most of the time. (This tends to flatten all art and make it worse, but that's another thing.) But it isn't magic and it's not alive.

Interesting UX decisions on DC's 311 app. While the Contact Information header says optional and you can skip all of these fields, if you add an email address the last name field becomes required with minimal cues it changed.

If you’re trying to undermine local DC laws, we should be brave enough to speak up to it every single time, that includes when it’s members of our own political party. Spoke to @washingtonian.com about DC and RCV.

Just emailed The Roost in Capitol Hill to let them know that while our household is a big fans and often order carryout, since they’re using DoorDash we won’t be ordering to go. I told them it would be great if they come up with other ordering options. #deletedoordash

The latest @citycastdc.bsky.social talks about an ANC commissioner and his neighbor who built a user-friendly 311 app alternative. He then built a rat tracker dashboard that’s designed with the user in mind. We need so much more of this—and the government should want to learn from folks like this.

One of the lessons I learned over and over again during my time as an ANC is just how many good policies fail due to poor implementation. Not in a dramatic way, either! Just because there’s a pervasive lack of accountability for making sure basic things happen. It transcends any particular agency.

With OUC's sessions on 311 being in person, I'm doing a survey of challenges with the current app! If you have experience with the DC 311 mobile app, I'd appreciate if you'd fill out the below linked survey. I'll be sharing key takeaways with OUC!

It’s really exciting to have Streets Market open in Hill East. I remember when this building got build a decade ago, and this was always the kind of business I hoped we’d see go in. Welcome to the neighborhood, Streets!
