A few days left for our call for papers on Philosophy through Art, Games and Fiction, dedicated to Helen De Cruz think.taylorandfranc... I am convinced that being playful and creative makes us better philosophers. Prove me right! #philsky #philosophy

Philosophy through Art, Games, and Fiction

Thing is, it would have been so, so easy to wash this stink off. Trans people and & progressives are desperate for hope. I think people would have been very willing to give him a chance to start fixing this, and quite a lot of grace in the meantime. But apparently, even a symbolic change too much.

🚨 Bridget Phillipson remains as the Minister for Women and Equalities After FWS Phillipson publicly stated that trans women should use men's toilets. She recently signed into force harmful & discriminatory statutory guidance which will devastate trans lives. Suggests no change re. trans rights.

“The fantasy that care work - within and beyond the home - can be somehow equalized (a fantasy held dear by many feminists, myself included) ushers into the ostensible private sphere the same forms of neoliberal task tabulation that circulate (unjustly) in our waged labor. Why would we want that…/1

I used to teach a class on how 'calculative devices' change things by asking students how they would feel if someone in their friendship group kept a written tally of who owed who a drink

The plane has finally arrived! Frustratingly close to completing representing every number from 1-50 using exactly 5 5s…if someone would like to put me out of my misery by telling me how to do 41 and 42 before I lose access to the internet I would be most grateful

“This is irresponsible. Given the current climate of the culture wars, chancellors and presidents—in consultation with their donors, of course—will have their own ideas about how to cash this blank check they have been handed.” Philosopher Richard Moran on a recent report on humanities scholarship:

The Wrong Way to Criticize the Humanities

A recent report, commissioned by the chancellors of Vanderbilt and Washington University, invites further intrusions on scholarly self-governance.

'What is perhaps remarkable about the Exeter cuts is that they are targeted at some of the university’s most successful departments, many of which turn over a profit even after they have made enormous and increasing contributions to the central university budget.' Read, rage and weep.

The Crisis in Britain’s Universities

The cuts that have been proposed at the University of Exeter demonstrates the crisis of purpose in Britain’s universities. Should not universities also be places to prepare for "eternal dwellings"?

I am once again begging universities to realise that staff - academic, professional services, estates, all of them - are the product they are trying to sell. Without staff there is nothing to sell. No amount of flashy buildings will replace staff in universities. UKHE is in freefall.

Dundee has always been one of the smaller Philosophy departments in the UK, but they play a crucial role in the academic ecosystem: with Warwick's turn towards analytic philosophy, Dundee might be the only solidly continental philosophy department left here. Don't let them be closed down!
