Trying out an EU-based stack for this website - Fershad Irani
As a bit of a side quest for work, I've been digging into the idea of a tech stack that's divorced from US big tech companies, with content and data being hosted on European-based infrastructure.

Just found a tender proposal for the Hospital Authority that wants you to make a submission by putting a CD-ROM in a physical box 🫠
I just encountered the worst credit card form. They 'helpfully' split up the card number field into 4 inputs, which breaks all autofill, and then if you made a typo in one of the inputs, you had to basically race the browser to click into the field to delete its contents before the debounce timer
My current contract is ending in September and a part of me is oddly zen about it, but I'm not sure if I should listen to that calm part or the 5% of me that's screaming crying throwing up about the prospect of looking for something else
Found this on Tumblr with the caption, "Saw a fire, stopped his car, got out and Madonna'd the fuck out of those flames". I want him carnally.

No one told me that once you turned 30 you were cursed to be always aware of the existence of your knees!!
Incredible report at a devastating time.
With layoffs at Xbox, sources indicate accessibility efforts have also been affected. What was once a champion of accessibility is now a shell of its former self, unsure if accessibility even has a place at the new Xbox. Read my first report for @aftermath.site here: aftermath.site/xbox-layoffs...
Fallen back into cross stitching, or as I like to call it, analog pixel art. However, the ratio of time spent is approximately 10:1 for time spent dreaming about new projects : time executing projects. whoops!
I've been having a wonderful time catching up with fellow devs in this past month. something about getting to have an actual conversation is nice! I've been mulling on if I should do open office hours for chatting about web stuff, or anything else! Would anyone actually sign up?
I should stop making fun of my Stardew Valley character for being a weakling, i scythed stuff for like 30 minutes yesterday and now I'm sore
A generation of managers made a career out of copying ideas from other apps they've seen into their own app. Today, AI (which has seen every app) can do this a hundred times faster than any of them. The only problem is that doing this was always pointless.
Thoughtless features never add up to a thoughtful product
Your first idea for how to solve a problem is most likely to be a low-impact hack. Delightful user experiences require a higher level of thinking.

I have potted my new pothos for all of 5 minutes and Miette already tried to eat it!!!
Designers talk a big game about "empathy" for users. But empathy without respect is nothing more than pity. As Big Tech goes all-in on AI to accelerate its feature pipelines, the disrespect for users that's baked into these systems naturally scales up with it. Now it has reached the breaking point.
Empathy and delight mean nothing when the software is disrespectful
Software is now something we do TO users, instead of something that we make FOR them.

Because Cantonese is a second language to me, I can generally tune it out on public transport. When I'm visiting melbourne, I'm subjected to the full range of human opinions all the time, like: - hubspot is the best software ever - why doesnt everyone just buy an iphone instead of a cheap phone
