I’m so sick and tired of the entire tech world resting on the massively undervalued work of folks in open source, in education, community building doing unpaid or drastically underpaid standards work. It goes on. It’s been happening for decades. It’s just do pronounced now.
it’s funny watching ai stuff average out into trends and now everyone's 'professional' post images look like terrible local flyers. and people will still post this garbage while telling folks 'taste is more important than ever'. brother ai now has two fonts and they're both for low-budget mma shows.
dog's figured out how to open doors. absolute scenes. send help. she is a competent menace.
linkedin is literally facebook but instead of boomers posting minions memes it’s middle managers posting the ai-generated business casual version of minions memes. i hate that this is where we go to find work. surely we can make something better.

one thing this gen ai clusterfuck has helped me with is realising how much of a snob i was. now i just have huge appreciation for anything made by real people with real intentions who just wanna put something out into this world.

Spent the first month or so of [hiatus/unemployment/semi-retirement] recovering from burnout, but over the last two weeks I've decorated two rooms and spent the last two (very hot) days literally just digging a hole and I have never missed working in front of a screen less than I do right now.
Made a little time to work through this and I have two things to share: @scott.is's writing remains undefeated and @arielsalminen.com has made an absolute banger of a library. If you haven't tried using Elena yet, I can't recommend it highly enough and this post is the perfect intro

i've wanted a head tattoo for a long while now and have been putting it off due to the whole needing to shave your head thing, but this heatwave pushed me over the edge and now i have no hair and ngl it feels incredible. s/o the balds y’all have been living the dream.
the price of hardware rn makes me very happy i built a lil bazzite gaming pc before things got wild, especially because i wait at least 2 years before buying games because it’s somehow become normal to ship absolute shit on day 1.

this 'watch me outsmart ai' content that’s popping up everywhere is an absolute travesty. 'watch me use the bad tool to be unfunny'. like yes we get it it is not intelligent but showing you’re smarter than a markov chain is like showing you’re more alive than margaret thatcher. get a grip.
now that i have emerged from hibernation i would quite like to do some talks or podcasts or interviews or whatever like a real author and educator. if you run a (AI-free) conf/content creation THING and want to me talk about mindful design and/or surviving this hellscape of an industry then HIYA.
It's really time we updated the conventional design process model to be more descriptive. We're in our third diamond era.

told my employees that they must consume as much water as they humanly can and built my entire quarter's performance metrics based on how hydrated they are now i am spending $1.2M/mo on cooler refills and our office is flooded with piss someone who is good at the economy please help me budget this
