Shakespeare understood the predictive mind model, that the mind creates experience, before it was cool. He understood that the nature of mind is both vivid and empty like an eastern yogi - where did he learn this? Not from someone else

'Our revels now are ended'

Our revels now are ended. These our actors,
As I foretold you, were all spirits and
Are melted into air, into thin air:
And, like the baseless fabric of this vision,
The cloud-capp'd towers, the gorgeous palaces,
The solemn temples, the great globe itself,
Yea, all which it inherit, shall dissolve
And, like this insubstantial pageant faded,
Leave not a rack behind. We are such stuff
As dreams are made on, and our little life
Is rounded with a sleep.

William Shakespeare
From The Tempest, Act 4 Scene 1

Happy New Year everyone!! There are some doubts about this, so my resolution, apart from more meditating, is to see through the negative appearances, and remember that each moment of life is infinitely more valuable than the difficult stuff that seems sometimes to happen in it

A nice example of a predictive processing error ‘The woman was frantic – it hadn’t eaten or pooed’: what happened when a hat bobble was brought to a hedgehog rescue centre?

I've put together a starter pack for the FND science community. Please repost to share the link and do let me know of folks I've missed so I can add them to the group. Thanks everyone 🙏 🧵 1/

Officially off Twitter today. I know “Twitter is not real life” blah blah but the truth is it completely changed mine. I went from isolation to the center of a brilliant community of disabled activists + scientists working on incredible things. Hope we can recreate the virtuous cycle here!

Important study! FND is common: “using our best method as a conservative estimate, there are likely a minimum of 50–100,000 people with FND in the UK.” “FND appears to be more prevalent than many other well-known and well-funded neurological disorders” Clinical + research funding needed!

I’m honoured to be launching this comprehensive briefing paper on FND neuropsychological and psychological management, across the lifespan, with a UK focus but global relevance - thanks to my fantastic colleagues on the Division of Neuropsychology Policy Unit working group 👏👏👏

🚨 THE PSYCHOLOGICAL MANAGEMENT OF FND IN CHILDREN AND ADULTS 🚨 A new briefing paper from the Division of Neuropsychology @donbps.bsky.social Proud to be part of the team working on this chaired by @nielsdetert.bsky.social & dedicated to the late Jason Price who originally conceived of the idea 🙏❤️

Atypical Interoception in FND seems a critical area to understand better, not least because it’s a rich potential target for intervention with existing therapies (esp mindfulness-based) - excellent new paper building our understanding of the neural basis

Honored to coauthor this fMRI study on cardiac #interoception in FND. Disrupted insula, ACC activity during interoceptive attention underscores the neural basis of altered body-brain signaling in FND, bringing the field one step toward targeted interventions. pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/39558709/

ISTDP also in my experience a very powerful intervention with selected patients with FND - strengths are experiential here-and-now mind-body-relationship technique, and building capacity for awareness of emotions and regulation of emotion-related anxiety while reducing self-defeating coping strats

Why do we use Intensive Short-term Dynamic Psychotherapy (ISTDP) as a treatment option in our multi-disciplinary pathway for Functional Neurological Disorder (FND)? 🧵 1/9

Nadine used careful and sophisticated psychophysics, computational modeling and neuroimaging to track down a neural basis for reality monitoring in the human brain. Very exciting to be along for the ride! #neuroskyence
