It's demoralizing living in a nonstop Abuse-a-thon: we've had to learn the sordid details of so many men's abhorrent behavior; I mean this summer has been Graham Platner, Andrew Tate, Jared Leto, Max Miller, plus the horrific L.A. rape-murder of the child by the rapper, to name a few lowlights.
If the Burnham government wanted a REALLY ambitious target to improve the life of the nation, it would be "Solar panels & aircon for your home for five grand, AND we'll lend you the money interest-free", and then building the infrastructure to deliver it.
Dave Andress@davidandress.bsky.social · 7h agoThe thing is, you can right now if you want have a combined solar/aircon install that will mean you are pretty much in profit on electricity generation forever after, and safe from a heatwave. But you have to own your home, & have five digits to spare.
When I'm well, it's doomscrolling, when I'm beset with brain fog it's scroomdolling.
I recommend the 1978 Bantam edition illustrated by Ian Miller. No surprise there... Miller chooses to illustrate the robot animals for this chapter.
Every time a new supermarket outlet opens in Ireland, there's a big article in the local paper about the jobs that will be created (but nothing about the jobs lost in local butchers, greengrocers, bakeries etc., who they're targetting). And after the big announcement, they start replacing those jobs

It's essential to add here that livestock farming, including cattle, is THE biggest cause of nature loss on Earth. While in certain situations seasonal grazing by tiny numbers of cattle can be beneficial (called 'conservation grazing'), this is *highly* exceptional. The vast majority kills nature.

It's a 'work in progress', but is clearly already delivering for nature!

Social media bans cannot be effectively enforced, and come with profound implications for everyone's human rights. Nevertheless the EU and Irish government seem hell bent on pushing through similar legislation here, without presenting a shred of evidence that such a ban will have a positive impact.

I really, really like this but for anyone with autism or adhd invited to a support group I very reluctantly went to one and within five minutes would have killed or jumped in front of a bullet for each and every other person there, and we didn't get hilariously rubbish superpowers either.

One of the deep cultural and policy differences between Ireland and England (not UK) is the punitive, often borderline or actually abusive secondary school system run by privatised 'trusts' with no local control. To an Irish person it really feels like a government that hates/fears its children.

Yes lockdown was really tough for kids. Lots of those kids are teenagers now so maybe as a thank you our establishments could stop deliberately making even more things worse for them due to a weird systemic hatred of our own youth
