Love this story, but the author repeats the mischaracterisation of the desert as an “empty” space where solar farms can be installed cheaply. Deserts are not empty. Deserts are teeming with specific life, flora & fauna, not to mention frequently being treasured ancestral land of Native people. (1/2)

Those canopies could also generate some 13 gigawatts of solar power, roughly half the new solar capacity needed to meet CA’s energy targets.
