Sometimes I think, “oh shit. My writing sounds like tweaked Gen AI.”🤖 And nope. That’s backwards. GenAI sounds like a ghost of my writing because they trained the LLMs on piles and piles of work they stole without permission from writers like me.

I don't think it's solely a function of people being unread. The prevalence of LLM slop just has everyone doubting *everything* and looking for patterns, enough to ignore or forget that some of these patterns are craft, and the LLM's do it because that's what they trained on

Like, a bad, forced metaphor is not a tell by itself because writers sometimes end up resorting to that. But a bad, forced metaphor for something that also was already abundantly clear without a metaphor? Then you can start asking whether a human writer would do this or whether they'd just not.

A human writer can always choose to drop a paragraph that's not working. "AI" can't because it didn't choose to put it there in the first place. It can only pattern match on the structure of prose, not the meaning.

The problem is that a lot of this emerging folk wisdom is treating "AI" like it is a kind of writer with habits. The actual tells come from the complete lack of intentionality to the writing. It's not a writer with habits because it's not a writer at all.

Personally I would love to see Bluesky expand. It shouldn’t just be the app for leftists who can’t stand Matt Yglesias! It should also be the app for liberals who can’t stand Matt Yglesias. And apolitical folks who can’t stand Yglesias. And, yes, even conservatives who can’t stand Matt Yglesias!

nobody is ever beating Barack Obama in a “broke the worst half of America’s brains” competition but I’m impressed that Anthony Fauci is emerging as the LeBron to his MJ

the whole piece is an extended exercise-as-prose. It’s saying, “this thing you’re experiencing right now? Kind of feels like gas? That’s called a visceral emotional reaction to authentic intellectual voice changing you into a living thing — AI can’t give you that.”
