I have long wanted to write for the excellent Bay Area publishing collective COYOTE...and they let me write something that honestly no other publication would. All hail independent media!!

Early on @coyotemedia.org made a list of dream bylines we'd LOVE to have on the site and @annaleen.bsky.social was one of the first on it for me. So stoked to see this piece about ~~speculative transit~~ and big dreams for the Bay Area. www.coyotemedia.org/funding-bay-...

Some difficult news: Fred, the Oakland baby night heron that @nuala.bsky.social and friends rescued in the course of reporting our herons and housing story, passed away. You can read Nuala's obituary here: petobits.coyotemedia.org#fred0729

Thank you @coyotemedia.org & Nuala Bishari for keeping up with the plight of our heron rookery! 💘 "The kids who asked the city to make the herons the official bird should be able to grow up seeing them in the wilds of Oakland, not just on their library cards." www.coyotemedia.org/herons-or-ho...

Fun fact: While reporting this story I helped RESCUE A NIGHT HERON. Their name is Fred and you have to read the piece to find out what happened 👀

Really interesting piece by @nuala.bsky.social about the battle for a lot in Oakland. It's a perfect spot for housing, and the planned building seems actually good and will be truly (!!) affordable (!!). It's also going to destroy the homes of a bunch of herons. www.coyotemedia.org/herons-or-ho...

I just saw a meme that said “get in losers, we’re reclaiming the emdash”. People. PEOPLE. Where are your STANDARDS? It CLEARLY should be “get in, losers — we’re reclaiming the em dash.”

Hey Bay Area folks, just a reminder that I curate the @coyotemedia.org calendar and am always looking for interesting stuff. What are you all up to this week? Do you know of cool things going on? Send them my way! calendar@coyotemedia.org <3

I love/hate looking for hotels because 90% of the search is skimming photoshopped images of generic rooms and reading weird reviews that always mention bugs — but THEN sometimes you get surprise gems like this !

Photos from a hotel website include a herd of zebras and descriptions of room amenities

UGH. So over billionaires in media. I hate all of this. If you do too, take a stand and send some love to an indie media outlet today. Become a member of our pack coyotemedia.org/#/portal or send us a tip coyotemedia.org/tip-jar We are worker owned and none of us will ever be billionaires!!

Breaking News: James Murdoch is buying New York magazine, Vox Media’s podcast network and the Vox website for more than $300 million, a dramatic expansion in U.S. media for the younger son of the media mogul Rupert Murdoch.

I’ve had two cats die in the last three years, and a dog who is in his last few months 😢 I don’t know what it is about having pet loss grief witnessed, but somehow it helps. We’ve made a way for that to happen. Meet COYOTE’s pet obituaries page. 💕🐶🐕🐱

A few months ago, a reader asked us if we'd post about her dog, Stella, who'd just passed away. While there are plenty of places to put remembrances of humans online, there aren't too many options for people who want to memorialize their pets. So we made one. www.coyotemedia.org/bay-area-pet...
