A forbidden donut near Appleton, WI at the moment. Close enough to the radar site to see hydrometeors (rain/hail) and debris forced to the outer edge of a fairly wide tornadic circulation.

I’ve been forecasting for a while now, and these last several years have been something else with wildfire smoke just absolutely tossing a wrench into weather prediction modeling. It’s not just “skies may be hazy today” but “temperatures may be 15 degrees cooler” or “storms may not form”.

SPC has issued a 10% area for tornado risk (at intensity level 1 no less), which is a first for that part of the forecast area. This is NOT your typical summer severe thunderstorm risk for areas with a lot of people sleeping and playing outdoors.

At first blush storms moving across the Northeast Kingdom seem like no big deal, but there is significant beam blockage due to the Green Mtns. From Sainte-Francoise it’s a different story. That sure looks like a debris signature from a tornado.

New paper alert! tl;dr: parts of what we thought were the oldest rocks on Venus might in fact be among the youngest. This story involves the "tessera" on Venus, which is some of the weirdest stuff in the Solar System. A thread:

This is the view at 2600 feet, south of the White Mtns right now, middle of the day on May 30. Snow has been mixing in at the lowest elevations over the last hour. Less than two weeks ago many of these places were in the low to mid 90s.

It mightn't look like much. But this little red dot is a supermassive black hole about 50 million times more massive than the Sun, its light dating to just 700 million years after the Big Bang—when the Universe was just 5% its current age. It is insane to me that we can see this far back.
