A very good tour guide is very much like a very good service designer. Accepts a line has been drawn, that’s the past, we are where we are, v good at talking about it from multiple angles, gets everyone in the same place, has discussions etc

That line from The Dark Knight — you either die a hero, or you live long enough to see yourself become the villain — is actually about surviving another showing at Bradford Cineworld, but this time when I got home I immediately ordered a massive TV so I don’t have to endure cinema audiences again

My piece for @yorkshirebylines.co.uk is still available. The real problem was abandonment. When the pits closed and the mills shut down, it wasn't just jobs that were lost they also lost their banks, their community centres, their local shops and their sense of pride.

The root of the anger: Why post-industrial towns blame the wrong scapegoat Decades of economic neglect have fuelled anger in many post-industrial towns, but often towards the wrong target By John Heywood

That thing when you get YouTube up on your TV, get New Order’s Crystal on and about 20 minutes later you’ve been through Throwing Muse’s Not Too Soon and onto Depeche Mode’s Policy of Truth — and how great was Friday night post pub MTV2

Can’t believe it’s got this late in the day and no one else has mentioned Fremantle’s 112-42 win over the West Coast Eagles. It’s was something like 40-30 at half time too. 💪🏼

Services that rely only on notifications on your phone interface from that service's app seem... living in their own world. I regularly miss notifications, despite being strict what notifications are allowed - and also because I am not always looking at my phone waiting for a notification to appear.

Exhibit A: British Gas explains how it's the customers' fault that they're cutting 1,300 call centre staff - people just prefer chat bots! Exhibit B: Trustpilot summary of reviews of British Gas customer service: frustration of being forced into online channels and unable to speak to a person.

But Chris O’Shea, the company’s chief executive, insisted that the changes were being made because customers preferred to take their queries to digital channels rather than people.

“AI isn’t driving these particular job reductions; that’s mainly due to changing customer behaviour,” he said. “What we’re seeing just now is over 90% of our customers actually use digital channels in the first instance, and we’ve seen a 20% reduction in customer calls, so this simply reflects the changing customer behaviour.

“We’ve got to reflect the changes in customer behaviour. We expect to grow more jobs around our digital interface, and maybe having fewer people on the phones.”Customers consistently note ambiguous experiences with customer service, with many praising the helpfulness, professionalism, and clear communication from agents and engineers, who explained everything and resolved issues quickly. Reviewers appreciated the ease of booking appointments, prompt confirmations, and the availability of out-of-hours support. However, a significant number of consumers expressed frustration with the inability to speak to a person, being redirected to online channels, and a lack of follow-through on promised callbacks. Many also reported issues with conflicting information, unaddressed complaints, and a perceived lack of care or understanding from customer service representatives, leading to prolonged unresolved problems and financial concerns.

Can't move on LinkedIn for people sharing their reckons on DSIT's being scrapped/merged -- and people showing off their selfies with Andy Burnham. Of course. Always the selfies with LinkedIn innit.

Emily Wilson on the ‘toxic’ reaction to her radical Odyssey translation

Rumoured to be a source for Nolan’s film, Wilson’s modern English version of Homer’s epic has become a culture wars battleground
