Today is the birthday of cartoonist Jackie Ormes (Aug. 1, 1911-Dec. 26, 1985), the first Black woman to create a newspaper comic strip that was read nationally in the US. She created Torchy Brown in Dixie to Harlem, Torchy in Heartbeats & Patty-Jo ‘n’ Ginger. Patty Jo became a toy doll.

I have a journalism award for a series of comics I co-authored on the inhumanity of electric monitoring. Note: I am not a journalist! The site for the award was taken down when DEI was essentially trashed everywhere, but the physical award is in my house!! It does exist!!

Asher Elbein@asherelbein.bsky.social · 3w agoBack when I was a comics journalist for a minute in 2017 (?), I wrote about C.B Cebulski, Marvel's then-new EIC, and his weirdly long history of pretending to be a Japanese man named Akira Yoshida. He is now, many years later, leaving that job to become Editor, Asia Originals, at Marvel in Tokyo.

The thing about JKR and telling folks not to buy Harry Potter shit is it isn't because we think it can take away her fortune and platform. She's so rich she would still be rich if she never sold another book It is because it is literally the smallest possible hurdle to clear to value trans lives

My favorite Sam Neil fact will always be that he designed a future Australian flag that replaces the union jack with the aboriginal flag for Event Horizon and insisted the film use it.
