I've seen so many small businesses fail based on their own poor management or timing of the market and immediately blaming bike lanes, parking, immigration, woke, anything but themselves. Small businesses can never fail, only be failed. They'll even lash out at their customers for "disloyalty"

i'll be traveling this week so I actually looked up to see if there were any precautions to avoid cyclospora at restaurants and everything says "avoid drinking water that may be contaminated with feces." .... is there anyone who was not doing this?

i haven't been to Bold Fork Books in DC but they seem cool (and they sold my book!) but it seems like they are attracting a lot of the culinary book release stuff that I wish would come to Baltimore. Everybody should do both!

i have to admit I've gotten a little bored with essays about how cookbooks/recipes are history, etc. I feel like at this point that argument has been made. I'd rather see people actually doing the history, or citing or something, not just these vague defenses of research that is theoretical

its pretty incredible how bad google is now. Searching with six keywords to find something hyper-specific that I wrote on my own website turns up completely unrelated social media posts from far more popular culinary accounts. bodes real well for ever reaching new readers.

in other grouchiness, while AI writing/art seems pretty obvious now, I will allow that it might not always be, and so I preemptively think people shouldn't be shamed for being tricked by it, just like I dont think we should blame people for being scammed. Because that's what it is, a scam.

In early 2025 I had a real "go for it" phase, applying to grants and scholarships/fellowships and even writing a book proposal. Eventually I got tired of rejection and moved on.

I accidentally made this stuff invasive in my backyard but it seems to have died down a bit after a few years
