"religion poisons everything" (christopher hitchens)

Brilliant letter from Stuart Thompson to Jeremy Clarkson about his comments that benefit claimants should write weekly thank you letters to tax payers detailing how they spend their benefits each week.

“We need an Ozempic for cars. They are growing at a phenomenal rate, wreaking havoc on roads, squeezing out smaller vehicles and endangering pedestrians. Like ever-hungry teenagers, cars in Europe are growing on average a centimetre wider every year.” Don’t repeat North America’s mistake, Europe.

Dieses Social-Media-Verbot für Jugendliche erinnert mich an eine Chemiefabrik, der nicht verboten wird, ihre Abwasser in den See zu leiten, sondern stattdessen den Jugendlichen verboten wird, im See zu schwimmen.

One of the best Dutch design principles is "forgiving infrastructure". It expects human error and provides the physical space for a minor accident to happen safely, far away from multi-ton vehicles. No one should be sentenced to death for simply falling off a bike.

A few seconds after I took this photo my 7yo had the worst bike crash they’ve had to date, including falling off their bike so hard they actually bounced off the street a bit. They’re scraped up & have a sore wrist, but are ok. I’m so glad to have space for kids to fall w/o worrying about drivers.

Our statement on the UK gov't's demand that all content on all devices sold or used in the UK be scanned, on the presumption of nudity, using a dystopian combination of age verification & content scanning. This proposal will not safeguard children. It endangers us all. signal.org/blog/pdfs/20...

In Belgium, employees receive compensation for every kilometre they ride, with some cyclists earning up to €810 per year. And why not? Biking saves public money for everyone. “All employees in Belgium who cycle to work are entitled to a bicycle allowance of €0.28 per kilometre of their commute.”

One in five people in Flanders commuted by bike and received compensation last year, but this figure is significantly lower in Brussels and Wallonia.

Typical Dutch street design: narrow city-centre streets where cars, pedestrians and cyclists share the road paving is used, alongside build-outs and tight geometry to naturally slow motor traffic. Then, once on main roads, clear red cycle tracks keep bikes and motor vehicles safely separated.
