'You'll choke too' - an aerial embroidery landscape inspired by all the wildfires happening right now... I'm upset every time I smell smoke outside and somehow we have people starting them maliciously too! But we all breathe the same air so they'll choke too (1/2 - see thread for close-ups)

An embroidery hoop containing a sewn landscape from above. It shows a forest on the right, a line of fire and charred ground with smoke on the left. The smoke is felted wool.

That long thing in the image you show is the spinous process of the fish vertebra. It is fused to the underlying vertebral body. The spinous process does not have an articulation/joint/etc. This bone is a jointed bone. AI sometimes makes a mistake.

The U.S. is undergoing one of the biggest changes to its social safety net in recent history, with huge numbers of people getting dropped from the government’s food assistance program. Nowhere has this been more dramatic than in Arizona. Listen as we explain why and its implications on "The Daily."

Arizona’s Food Stamp Crisis Is Coming for the Rest of the U.S.

The number of people who receive nutrition assistance in Arizona has dropped significantly in a matter of months.

I don't think anyone has any idea of how thin the margins are in science. To have funding agencies or private foundations come back on a proposal and ask you to cut 10-20%, or more from a project simply means the work cannot be done. Modular grants have not been adjusted for inflation in >20yrs.

It has been fun watching the field of connectomics which we built tools to understand how neurons are connected to one another, influence other fields in science like oncology (cancer), and development, and... #Connectomics has become #VolumeEM as a field.

The new Iranian "deal". This is such an incredible self own by America. There was no tariff system that sent money to Iran or Oman prior to Trump launching a war against Iran. There was very little leverage that Iran had outside of the Middle East with proxy conflicts, until Trump waded into this.

Reuters: Iran wants fees of 5%-7% of the price of cargo from ships using the strait; Oman wants 3%. "Making fees voluntary, at least nominally, could be a way out of the impasse, although an implied threat of Iranian attacks could mean shippers would be unlikely to risk transit without paying."

Congratulations Abdul!!!! I can’t believe I know a Democratic nominee for Senate! Or that this picture was 11 years ago. The idea of Abdul being in the Senate advocating for public health and access to health care, especially at a time when RFKJ is in charge at HHS, is incredible to contemplate.

I don’t exactly have the power of an AOC endorsement, but I’ve known Abdul for quite some time and I would be thrilled to see him represent public health in the Senate. He was our class speaker when I graduated from undergrad (Go Blue!) and then I got to know him better when were both at Columbia.

This is all true. Michael Flynn spent years inside the Army making sure he got ahead upon the backs of junior officers and enlisted personnel, profiting off of every interaction. If Flynn was talking to you he was trying to figure out how to capitalize on your back. Then he went to work for Trump.

Michael Flynn got paid by the Russian government to do anti-American propaganda, got paid by the Turkish government to conspire to break US laws, and now got paid by the US government for helping cover up a hostile anti-American foreign intelligence operation, ensuring perpetrators got away with it.

My quote of the day Dawn showed faintly in the east. Among the ruins, one wall stood alone. Within the wall, a last voice said, over and over again and again, even as the sun rose to shine upon the heaped rubble and steam: Today is August 5, 2026, today is August 5, 2026, today is... Ray Bradbury
