"Lovely night, isn't it?" Stede mumbled, pointing at the sky. Ed's eyes flickered up, and he pursed his lips with a hum.

"Yeah, s'pose so."

Stede lowered his arm and gave Ed a meek smile. "And today? Did you enjoy it?"

Ed took longer to answer, as if he was replaying the the day in his mind. "Yeah, I did. In the end."

"Good. That's good." Stede licked his lips and swallowed before clearing his throat, ridding it of any nervous catches. "I know it started a little rough..."

Ed looked at Stede and shook his head. "Mostly my fault, mate," he offered, "wasn't helping by being so fucking grumpy."

"You weren't being grumpy."

"Yeah, I was."

"Alright, you might have been a little grumpy, but..." Stede had the urge to fidget, but as his hands made little fists, he took a deep breath and released them. "Could you please tell me what I did to make you mad at me?"

"There shall be no time limit," Buttons said, his voice deep and eerie, "but you best be knowin' how to work together to triumph over your opponents..."

Stede gulped as he peered at the other pairs, huddled close and making giggly little whispers.

Unless Stede was imagining things, they were also shooting glances at him and Ed, and their chuckles grew louder. Stede puffed his chest in defiance. He already knew that he and Ed were unlikely to win, but the crew didn't have to be so immature about it.

"The fuck are they laughing at?" Stede looked at Ed, and Ed's cheeks were pink and fuming. "I can win this, I'm fuckin' Blackbeard!"

Stede frowned at him, noting the obvious omission. "We can win this, Ed."
Ed spluttered, granting Stede only a glance. "Yeah. Right. We. Whatever."

"Whatever?" Stede spun on his heel and stared straight at Ed. "What has been your problem?"

Ed jerked towards Stede, and his eyes were wider than Stede had ever seen them. "What do you mean, my problem?"

Stede's brows shot to his hairline. "What do you mean, my-"

"Pairs!" Buttons bellowed, causing both Ed and Stede to jump. "Take your places!"

“So…” Stede bristled, still hot from volleyball. “I suppose I should be the mermaid, then.”

Ed turned to Stede, and Stede found himself studied as Ed’s eyes fell to his feet and lifted to his face.

“S’okay,” Ed grunted, crouching onto the sand. “I know you like your suits clean.”

Stede observed his outfit—his frilly white jabot hanging loose over his lavender blouse, tucked into his soft purple breeches. He pinched his blouse before glancing at Ed, who lay on his side while twirling his black jabot around his finger, casual and carefree.

“Ed?” Stede said, kneeling onto the sand and smoothing out his breeches. “Are we—are you… okay?”

Ed stopped twisting his jabot, and his eyes darted away before they returned to Stede, unemotive. “Why wouldn’t I be?”

Stede’s mouth went dry. Ed gave no indication today or the last few days that he was okay. Of course, he wasn’t going to show his true feelings now, but after watching Ed grow grumpier after each loss, Stede had to put an end to it before it got worse.

“Ed? Stede murmured. “After all this… can we talk?”

Over the sound of his rabbiting heart, Stede could make out Buttons reminding the pairs they had only five minutes to create their tails, but he tuned it all out as Ed let go of his jabot and opened his mouth. However, as Ed licked his lips, grainy sounds of sand being tossed fell into tune.

The other man stares at him, cocking his head before looking back down to the bar. Ed only notices that he’s almost obsessively polishing the surface with a rag now that Ed’s attention follows the man’s eyes. He seems nervous, too, despite his projected confidence and enthusiasm.
“I had to find a space for it,” the man confesses. “You see, when Mary and I—” He cuts himself off with a huff, throwing a glance at the group in the corner booth, who now seem fully invested in watching them. They’re not even subtle about it. “Maybe I shouldn’t be telling you this. It’s a long story, and I don’t even know your name!”
Ed laughs. “That one is easy to solve, at least.” He holds out his hand. “I’m Ed.”
“Stede,” the other man says, shaking his hand. Stede’s hand is warm and soft, his handshake firm. Ed likes him a lot already. “Still, though. It’s a little… personal.”
“You don’t have to tell me,” Ed repeats, shrugging, trying to pretend he’s much cooler and much less invested than he really is. Because he does want to know. He’s always loved a little bit of gossip, and this feels like prime gossip material, even though it’s from and about someone he’s just met. And he loves long stories, which means that this Stede is already proving to be fascinating, and Ed absolutely wants to know more about him. “But I am curious. I just like it, y’know.” Ed turns to look at the piano again.
