The best ones would have a twist at the end that put the whole story in a new light. Short story collections aren't just a great way to pick up new vocabulary/kanji, but to see a variety of writing styles in Japanese.

Someone needs to write more in English on Okinawan politician Senaga Kamejiro. There’s a museum on his life, which I saw is relocating.
Oh now I find out there's a book that teaches something I took 30 years of playing to manage on my own...

I loved reading Park Wan-suh's stories in grad school. Beautiful in and of themselves, they were also a useful correlate to the Okinawan literature I was exploring to write about generational trauma after the Battle of Okinawa. (She was also the reason I started learning Korean... 😌) #booksky

Glad to see this in translation. The original (聞かなかった場所) was a deceptively engaging read. While Tsuneo tries to unravel the events leading to his wife's death--this personal sleuthing compelling the narrative--we only gradually realize how Tsuneo himself unravels. #booksky
