I'm not a video game guy and definitely didn't need RESIDENT EVIL minus Milla Jovovich, but Zach Cregger's take on it is a blast. It has that rare EVIL DEAD II tone where there are many big laughs, but not at the expense of the horror.

I loved BARBARIAN and WEAPONS, so I expect to like Cregger's RESIDENT EVIL. But as a non-gamer it's going to be hard to get used to it apparently being about some regular dipshit guy stumbling around when I know for a fact it could be about Milla Jovovich in leather doing flips and shit.

I really liked Na Hong-jin's HOPE, a large scale monster movie with humor, personality and (most of all) masterful action set pieces.

If this new RESIDENT EVIL catches on they need to give Milla Jovovich some other long-running, ever-evolving franchise to keep our world in balance. I would've accepted MONSTER HUNTER or IN THE LOST LANDS, but those don't seem to have stuck.

Good grief, thanks to a video on Instagram, I've just discovered that the Criterion edition of Lone Wolf & Cub (that I've had on my shelf for about 9 years) has a secret compartment in the spine containing the blueprint for the weaponised babycart..!
