🚨 Grassroots football league forced to delay the start of its season due to heat wave. While elite teams and Fifa promote fossil fuel interests, the climate crisis is having significant consequences for grassroots football. Here's the state of play. 🧵 1/7

Scratch of the day: local football season postponed due to ‘rock hard’ pitches

Drought and record heat have forced the Norfolk and Suffolk league to move kick-off to the end of August as the ground is deemed too dangerous to play on

Somewhat incredibly, Tony Blair has chosen the week that the UK's temperature record for May has been smashed by more than 2C to reiterate his hot take on net-zero Job done, though, as all the UK media is now leading with him saying "drill, baby, drill" rather than the exceptionally extreme weather

Thrilled for Tony Blair that he gets to operate in a world where climate change is just not that big a problem and we can therefore keep putting off tackling it until some indeterminate point in the future. www.theguardian.com/politics/202...

Tony Blair tells Starmer and rivals: abandon net zero and move closer to Trump

In highly unusual intervention, ex-PM says his party’s ‘almost infinite capacity for self-delusion’ makes it likely to lose next election

"Labour must remember and reassert what it is we are here to do: address inequality – economic and political... political equality at the ballot box is fundamental to delivering equality everywhere else in society." ✍️ @alexsobel.co.uk in @labourlist.bsky.social labourlist.org/2026/05/labo...

A HUGE, narrative-breaking moment for the UK car market New EVs are now cheaper than petrol cars on average, says Autotrader Last yr CCC said price parity was due by 2028 – and it's already here And EVs are already MUCH cheaper to run than petrol

Times: "Tony Blair urges Ed Miliband: Don’t be ideological on net zero" "Britain should produce more clean energy while accelerating domestic oil & gas production" - TBI This would be a tad more credible if the Tony Blair Institute's clients weren't despotic petro-states like UAE & Saudi Arabia.

A short piece we wrote about fantasies of oil power in the US! TLDR: Oil saturates US cultural imaginations, and US elites (& others) are deeply attached to oil. But fantasies of oil power exhibit insecurities in a context where the green transition is beginning to happen (albeit far too slowly).

This is my favorite climate change chart. Japanese monks, aristocrats, and emperors kept meticulous records of cherry blossom festivals for 1,200 years and accidentally built the world's longest climate dataset.

It's only worth going back to the Moon if it makes us look properly again at Earth, and appreciate how beautiful, precious and fragile what we have here is. The most famous images from Apollo aren't about the Moon - they're pictures of Earth. We need to stop taking our home for granted.

You might have formed the impression that Paul Johnson, former director of the Institute for Fiscal Studies, knows what he's talking about. The media treats him like the voice of God. But here he is - and not for the first time - talking out of his hat. Let's break it down in a short thread. 🧵

This is utter garbage. I believe in net zero. We need to get there. But renewables are not competitive. That's why they are subsidised. Fossil fuel markets are highly competitive. It shouldn't be hard to hold these two thoughts at the same time.

Really enjoyed this - thanks for having me on Dave! If you listen to the episode and others on the podcast and like them, please consider chucking in a couple of quid to support Your Brain on Climate.

🧵A political/media guide to the "truth" about net-zero 1) Add up costs to install & run a net-zero energy system 2) Pretend fossil-fuelled alternatives wld be free 3) Do say "eco zealots are bankrupting us" 4) Don't say "free cars if we scrap net-zero" cos it sounds ridiculous 5) That's it! 1/10

Sure London has its problems, but I’m not even rly willing to entertain that conversation since it’s in the face of such an onslaught of racist lies about the place. London is the proof that integrated, diverse communities thrive living side by side. They HATE that. #r4today

This is a strange way to headline a story showing only 17% of people agree with Nigel Farage’s scientifically illiterate belief that climate change is nothing to worry about. Almost as if The Times has an agenda. www.thetimes.com/article/d92d...

Farage nearly as trusted as Labour on climate change, poll shows

Times research finds that the Reform UK leader seen as having the right policies on global warming by 22 per cent of voters, barely less than Starmer and Miliband
