Solo working, not just screen time, has driven the surge in time young adults spend alone. buff.ly/v7pfxOa

Young adults feel lonelier than older adults: 14% said they felt lonely all the time—twice the rate of 60–69‑year‑olds—and young people in poor health spent three more hours a day alone in 2023 than in 2014–15.

Parth Pandya, Researcher at the Resolution Foundation, said:
“Young adults are now spending more time alone than they did a decade ago, with men aged 18-29 in particular now alone for more than two-fifths of their waking hours.’’
“Screen time is the usual suspect in conversations about the rise in loneliness among young people, but time spent doing paid work by themselves was the biggest driver of rising hours spent alone, with working from home – a legacy of the Covid-19 pandemic – accounting for the majority of this.
“If policy makers are serious about improving young people’s wellbeing, then work needs to be part of the debate as much as screen time.’’

Andy Burnham has put boosting affordable housing centre-stage and with 134,000 families in temporary accommodation in England and 1.3 million on the housing waiting list, this ambition is welcome and necessary.

The government will need to strike a balance between affordability for tenants and building at scale. By making careful use of the Social and Affordable Homes Programme, private developer contributions and the National Housing Bank, the new Government can boost the supply of social rent housing and build more affordable housing overall.

But building takes time. Close to one million low-income renters already face a shortfall between their rent and housing support, and that gap will hit a record high this autumn. The new Prime Minister should commit to relinking housing support with local rent levels in the upcoming Budget.

Britain’s regional income gaps have barely moved in thirty years. Disposable incomes in the highest income local area (Kensington and Chelsea) are, at £60,584, four-and-a-half times higher than the lowest (Leicester, at £13,398) ⤵️ buff.ly/I7DTRZo

Ruth Curtice, Chief Executive of the Resolution Foundation, said:

“Britain has among the highest regional inequality of any advanced economy, and successive governments have tried and failed to reduce these income divides. The gap between rich places like Kensington and Chelsea and poor places like Leicester is just as high today as they were 30 years ago.

“There are bright spots. Employment and pay gaps have narrowed, and Manchester’s remarkable revival shows that decline is not destiny. But the UK’s major cities, once the powerhouses of national economic growth, continue to underperform.

“PM-in-waiting Andy Burnham has rightly put regional inequality at the top of his agenda. But turning ambition into reality will require investment in transport, housing and wider economic development on a scale that no recent political leader has come close to meeting. Unless that investment is taken seriously, the economic and political cost of Britain’s geographic divides will continue.”

Gen Z has become the stay at home generation, Nearly two-thirds (63 per cent) of people in their early 20s now remain ‘at home’, up 12 percentage points since 2011.

Other forms of housing tenure have increasingly fallen out of reach. Private rent levels have not become relatively more expensive in the decade to 2022-2024 but the private rented sector is the most expensive and worst quality tenure, so young people today often opt to live with their parents than make financial sacrifices.

.access to home ownership is increasingly and unequally shaped by (parental) wealth. In 2018-20, 20-29-year-olds with the highest incomes were 6 percentage points more likely to have received an inheritance and or gift worth at least £1,000 than those with the lowest incomes.

Around one-third of first time buyers last year had parental help, up 20 percentage points than 20 years ago.

The biggest barrier to home ownership are deposits, and our proposed Starter Deposit Scheme is designed to tackle this by providing a 5 per cent loan of the 25th percentile price of an entry-level home.
