Sometimes I put a lot of heart into demo models for a dev log. This is Thibault the sunfish, summoned into this world between two rays of light on a Sunday afternoon in Normandy. Latest dev log on new vertex animations here 👉 ko-fi.com/post/Additio...

I wish more people recognized the banality of evil in their own lives, like how they contribute to the mass violence inflicted on non-human animals. The Zone of Interest is such a powerful depiction of a perfect little world existing alongside horrors that have become normalized and accepted.

I must say, considering the extreme heat currently affecting France, working on a deep-sea game certainly helps. My mind is submerged in the cold depths of Seashine. I even stay in the dark to help trick my brain into thinking it's in a cold, lightless environment.

I’ve just watched more slow-motion footage of shark bites to better understand how the mouth moves. I’m starting to figure out how to properly do it in my new vertex animation system. Here’s the latest attack animation for the Karapoga. #gamedev #animation #shark

The goblin shark’s attack is now much closer to a real jaw dislocation. The two-pose attack animation works especially well here. The model only reveals its true monstrosity when it attacks, just like the game itself. 😬 #gamedev #thalassophobia #shark

Because all animals are rotated to face the camera, I have to exaggerate the attack blendshape that drives the forward motion during the bite. It’s very tricky to make the head movement feel visible enough without introducing strange deformations. #gamedev #animation #greatwhiteshark

I’m preparing a dev log explaining how bumping into other animals will be handled by a new irritation behavior. In the meantime, enjoy watching me bump into the new Momona. Sorry, friend. 😭 ⚠️ Reminder: the Momona isn’t a blobfish, it’s an imaginary cousin of the blobfish. #gamedev

The updated Nanakia wasn't looking good enough once integrated into the game, so I went back and reworked it. I think this will be the final version. If any of you have ideas about which real family of #fish the Nanakia could belong to (or be related to) I'd love to hear them. 🙏 #gamedev

I’m still refining the vertex animation for long-bodied animals, specifically the yaw and pitch damping. I’m really happy that I managed to achieve this result using only vertex offsets and two blendshapes baked into a single UV(WX) channel. #gamedev #indiedev
