“It is time to look seriously at a lightweight autonomous shuttle service to reconnect the community with Hammersmith town centre. Reality has finally dawned that there is no way to reopen it to cars, so we can at last get on with working out what could be possible with the bridge we actually have.”

Hammersmith Bridge won’t reopen to cars after repairs deemed too costly

Council report instead recommends focusing on safeguarding access for the 12,000 pedestrians and cyclists who use the west London crossing each day

1. The latest importunate poop to drop on our heads from Telegraph columnist Steve Bird has been concocted by one of west London’s worst people, David Tarsh, a drearily fixated motor lobbyist who sometimes finds it expedient to pose as a concerned pedestrian.

We're "excessively lax" about holding motorists accountable for their actions because for decades every level of society - including the people who should be keeping us safe - have seen motor harm as inevitable anf outside anyone's control #motonormativity www.theguardian.com/money/2026/a...

Rise of the ‘ghost owner’: 18,000 UK vehicles in use without proper records

Exclusive: Labour MP calls on DVLA to take action, saying speeding, hit and runs and other crimes are going unpunished

In London we have Labour MPs standing up in the House of Commons and knowingly spreading falsehoods about motor traffic increasing and cycling decreasing since the closure of Hammersmith Bridge to motor vehicles. The conspiracy runs deep and it will take a generation to shift the mindset.

"There's always going to be debate in city planning. Always. But there's good faith debate, based on disagreements, and then there's deliberate lies and misinformation." The closure of Hammersmith Bridge to motor vehicles has created much safer conditions for walking and cycling across a huge area of Hammersmith and Barnes and resulted in fewer vehicles on all West London bridges including Putney and Chiswick. Keep it closed to cars forever.

Thanks to everyone who has written to me about the impact the Hammersmith Bridge vehicle closure has on you. Keep them coming!

Crossed Hammersmith bridge on my bike earlier & honestly only sociopaths who live nowhere near here would think it’s a good idea to bring 25k cars back over this bridge every day Sound on for a rant about the Putney politicians demanding exactly this based on convenient lies & political cowardice

Labour politicians in Wandsworth are out of control with their quite deliberate spreading of misinformation about Hammersmith Bridge. It is time for them to accept it will never open to cars again and start working on solutions to traffic problems in Putney. Try some cycle lanes and LTNs.

Actual manual counts were taken by the DfT in 2017, 2019 (after the closure), 2021 and 2023. They show traffic was comparable immediately after the HB closure (41k in 2019 compared to 43k in 2017), then fell to 33k in 2021 before rising to 37k in 2023. Here: roadtraffic.dft.gov.uk/count-points...

Another great starter pack—highly recommended. It’s worth noting that more of us need to work on multiple important issues simultaneously. Making a city more walkable isn’t just placemaking; it also improves mental health, combats loneliness epidemic, reduces crime, AND helps tackle #climatechange.

ICYMI, this STARTER PACK is my team-up with celebrated climate scientist @katharinehayhoe.com, and it’s full of people & organizations that specifically embrace the overlap between better cities and climate action! Please follow them, and help spread the pack around! #ClimateAction #UrbanistShoutOut

Sadly Fleur is continuing to deliberately mislead Putney residents by claiming that the closure of Hammersmith Bridge to cars is increasing traffic in Putney. The reality is that traffic is down on all surrounding bridges since the closure of Hammersmith Bridge. Trust in politics 🧐

The TCCG group behind this petition are simply the latest astroturf front for the local H&F car lobby, and are absolutely riddled with local tories who are implacably opposed to any and every measure to reduce motor traffic, improve air quality or support cycling and walking. Embarrassing stuff

This latest 'secret war on motorists' is.... the govt confirming it won't go ahead with Rishi Sunak's 2023 'Plan for Drivers', a half-baked and panicked series of measures to make it harder for councils to introduce LTNs and 20mph zones which not even the Conservatives ever really believed in.
