Carney's speech on Canada's future relationship with the EU was so ambitious, positive and far-reaching that it's made Brexit Britain's red lines look even more pathetic than they did before! Unless Burnham bins them and joins at least the Single Market, the New World Order will be formed without us

Those calling for state pension cut are silent on their tax perks. Gross tax relief on pension contributions £83.9bn. 14% went to 1.1m additional rate tax payers. 57% to 6.6m higher rate (40%) payers. 29% went to 30.4m basic rate (20%) payers. Equalizing it at 20% for all leaves £14.5bn spare.

The £36m donations are legal and to change the law retrospectively would be outrageous! Yes, it was announced in Parliament on 25 March that the legislation would apply to any donations from that day onwards, but that was the day all Reform MPs staged a walk-out, so we missed it.

I've done a deep-dive on the Harborne and Delo mega-donations over the weekend, and whether they may have to be handed back From my reading, a lot of unlikely things have to be true at once for the two £36m 'gifts' to be allowed once the (retrospective) Representation of the People Bill becomes law

Calling all lawyers! Re. Harborne's £36m gift to Reform over the weekend... As I posted yday, he still listed his address as 'Bangkok' in a June legal filing That breaks the March 25 cutoff for overseas donations over £100k, right? Well. He MAY be relying on this carve-out in the elections bill:

4) In relation to a donation received by the registered party before the commencement day, those provisions and amendments have effect only in the following cases— (a) 10 where the donation is received on or after 25 March 2026 at a time when the individual is an overseas contributor by virtue of section 55B(2)(a) of PPERA 2000 (overseas elector); (b) where— (i) the donation is received on or after 25 March 2026 at a time 15 when the individual is an overseas contributor by virtue of section 55B(2)(b) of PPERA 2000 (elector previously not UK resident), and (ii) the individual was registered in an electoral register in pursuance of an overseas elector’s declaration during all or 20 part of the period beginning with 25 March 2026 and ending when the donation is received; (c) where— (i) the donation is received on or after 6 July 2026 at a time when the individual is an overseas contributor by virtue of 25 section 55B(2)(b) of PPERA 2000 (elector previously not UK resident), (ii) the condition in paragraph (b)(ii) (registration as overseas elector) is not met, and (iii) the individual was, during all or part of the period beginning 30 with 6 July 2026 and ending when the donation is received, not resident in the United Kingdom. (5) For the purposes of sub-paragraph (4)(c)(iii), where an individual— (a) is not resident in the United Kingdom, but (b) is registered in an electoral register in pursuance of a service declaration, the individual is to be treated as being resident in the United Kingdom at 35 that time.

I was asked "What do other countries do about big money in politics?" Canada is a useful case study as their parliamentary system closely mirrors the UK's (for obvious reasons) - except they've totally clamped down on mega-donations.

Canada has a total ban on company/corporate donations. Only individuals who are Canadian citizens or permanent residents can make contributions and it's capped at $1,750 a year. They still have functioning parties and the sky hasn't fallen in. Quite the opposite... www.elections.ca/content.aspx...
