I'm not sure folks have realized just how crazy the second half of 2026 and 2027 will be for global temperatures – on the back of a record-smashing El Niño event. Here is my latest estimate of where both years will end up compared to global temperatures since 1850.

This is a representative sample of the discourse under Just Bins' post about Regina police approving the noise abatement permit so our downtown mosque can broadcast a call-to-prayer for 3min once a week. Racism. Ignorance. Calls for violence. #yqrcc

"We need to do X thing that I personally do not believe in because of opinion polls & savvy electoral considerations" is just psychologically untenable after a while. You get dug in arguing for X thing and after a while you're just ... a supporter of X thing. Many such cases.

One key thing about reactionary centrism is that if you argue for the conservative position on purely savvy electoral grounds long enough ... you start to just believe the conservative position. I'm watching this happen in climate as the RC brigade becomes more & more explicitly pro-fossil fuels.

It was inevitable that reactionary centrists would turn against harm reduction and call for a return to mass incarceration

I don't know how to explain to the people who pop up when creatives complain about "AI" to say there are legit uses for it just how much they sound like someone saying "Well actually fire is used to make bread" when people are talking about an organized arson ring burning down their fucking houses

There is a certain level of obtuseness in (some) "AI" apologists when they flounce up to point out what "AI" is good for in science, etc, while eliding the fact that almost none of that use is driving the current market capitalization, environmental degradation and resource hogging of the field

It would be easy to call this the “new normal“ but that’s incorrect. In actual fact, “normal” is going to keep getting worse and worse and worse. Just how bad it will get depends entirely on how fast & far we go on real, legitimate (not performative) #ClimateAction. We know how. It’s about will.

Bordeaux, France, has now recorded more days above 40°C in 2026 alone than during the entire 105-year period from 1920 (when observations began) to 2025. This is deeply shocking.

Thomas Crown Affair is about a bored billionaire who does burglary. B/c when a billionaire does burglary it's a fun adventure. When a poor person does burglary that's a crime that gets you prison time & nobody makes a movie. Unless you count Les Mis.

Days after Shopify CEO Tobi Lutke publicly supported the idea that pensioners and the poor should lose their right to vote — and the wealthy should have extra votes — Elon Musk called him a "national treasure." But that's not all. Lutke also has the ear of Canada's prime minister. Here's proof:

I was selfishly hoping this meeting would be farther along by now. I want to see it to the end but I think I will have to do some parenting in a bit & I have a farewell party this evening for a friend who's moving away. #yqrcc
