ꭓle Ormsby 𓆙@e-infinity.space · 2w agoResolving ambiguity in order of operations is easy: simply enumerate all possible parsings of a given expression, compute each value, and then average. E.g., for 9-3-3÷3, ((9−3)−3)÷3 = 1 (9−(3−3))÷3 = 3 (9−3)−(3÷3) = 5 9−(3−(3÷3)) = 7 9−((3−3)÷3) = 9 so 9-3-3÷3 = (1+3+5+7+9)/5 = 5. Voilà! 🧮

As a non-philosopher I find the current #PhilSky discourse on flirting fascinating. More than most topics, it has seemed to open lines of disagreement that expose how philosophers actually think and engage with ideas, both on their own and in conversation with others.
This movie poster is absolutely inspired! It immediately sheds surprising philosophical insights on (our memory of) the cartoon, and sets expectations about how the film will treat the subject.

As I get older the thing I think is most important to humans as a species is our relationship to one another and to nature. Everything else is secondary. This is fundamental to our survival as individuals and as a species. Call me an old hippy if you like.

Sports have a unique ability to highlight age for viewers. But I’ll add, as somebody who is 45 and not just over 35, I’ve found the emphasis wanes as time goes on.

My favorite thing about the release of Independence Day was that it was WIDELY advertised that it would be released on July 4 because… obviously. But then they “unexpectedly” announced a July 2 release with short notice. That way people could “believe” the story was about the current moment.

One nice thing about being older than all the sports stars is that I now get to pretend that the reason I’m not as good is solely because I’m too old.
Setting aside the absurd premise of this op-ed, I love that the WSJ social copy writer felt the need to hedge with "not that has been reported" "No one's reported that one of the most famous popstars in the world dated a man who at the time was a random oyster farmer from Maine, BUT IT IS POSSIBLE"
