This is an excellent post that decimates the idea that there is a Truth Police out there actively monitoring bad faith academic work. As most academics and especially journal editors know, a system built on assuming good faith will always struggle against LaCour type fabulists.

There are 2 constraints on academics: the cuts in funding & restrictions on how universities manage their finances combined with a growing demand for more reporting of how they spend the monies. The 1st restricts the pie, the 2nd raises bureaucratic costs. Both stem from a deep suspicion of academia

And the dangerous financial situation they have allowed to fester, or indeed worsened, in one of Britain’s leading sectors.

if there’s anything I would want to drill into the public consciousness it’s that there are almost always like a dozen ways to approach any given problem and some of them will be more effective than others and we have to stop acting like the questions around it are against fixing the issue
one tendency that comes out about period films is the insistence that XYZ moral thought would not have occurred to anyone in the ancient world. to be sure there are moral innovations and changes but the existence of thorough dissatisfaction with the present moral order is not a modern phenomenon
I wouldn’t be surprised if it made Nolan’s week. She took him seriously, which is the real capital. Fans never get that. It’s also why Beyonce can’t achieve the canonization she so desperately craves — her fans shielding her from precisely the kind of criticism that would elevate her work.

Arab traders, who introduced coffee (which they called "java") to the Indies, noted that the people of the region were inordinately fond of it. The name stuck.

Meanwhile, every Black person I actually saw talking about him, save one writer on Substack, was as horrified as Solomon. The whole campaign felt like a psy-op.
