Drought, global change, and the temporal weirdness of trees. Assistant Professor at UNLV Southwest Climate Adaptation Science Center (swcasc.arizona.edu) Drewpeltier.com Opinions my own. he/him/his
Looking for the Southwest Chapter at ESA 2026? You can find us at our table in the exhibit hall or at one of our events! We have an organized oral session, a business mixer and a career central event. We are excited to see everyone in Salt Lake City!🌵
I’d like to make it clear for all the people following me what the sheer gravity of the news is. Without this facility we can’t ensure constant communication with spacecraft beyond Earth orbit. If this facility is off-line, the Artemis program cannot send a crew to the Moon.

Chocolate week on Bake Off is gonna be insane this year.
Useful for Met Office to say. Now UK govt needs to absorb this in its bones. "We are right now living in a time of historic and unprecedented change, and in terms of temperature, on annual, seasonal, monthly and daily timescales, this evidence shows the climate of the 20th Century has now gone,"
Journal of Forestry Research spamming me with an email, subject line all caps "NEW HOT ARTICLES".
My team is recruiting a MSc student for a new grant investigating forested wetland responses to Hurricane Helene. The student will lead a GIS project mapping disturbance type and severity in the ETSU Geosciences dept. The catch: they would need to start this fall semester (about a month from now).
Dendro colleagues in Scotland are particularly devastated to see fire in a stand of 300yr old Caledonian pines right now. If wind-driven flame height takes the fire into the canopy, or deep enough to harm roots it could be stand clearing. #cairngorms #wildfire
I love interviewing botanists. Whenever you come across an Echinocactus in the field, they all make the exact same joke, and you end up with transcripts that look like this. <nerd joke alert> 🤦♀️🌵
the new data management plan tool on research.gov seems... confusing? The documentation isn't helping me much. Has anyone done this and willing to share what they entered? 🧪
Research.gov - Grants Management for NSF Community
NSF's Research.gov is where to prepare and submit proposals, manage awards, and participate in reviews and panels.

We will soon be advertising a 3-year postdoctoral position at Bristol aimed at enhancing our modelling capacity to better characterise vegetation recovery & legacy effects following fire. Please keep us in mind if this is your speciality 😀 🔥🌳 🌱
Nobody: what is a tree, anyway? Us: authors.elsevier.com/sd/article/S... (Review out today, in which we ask whether xylem disconnection arising early in wood anatomy is convergent with disconnection seen across tall plants and whether tree evolution requires disconnection given periodic drought.)
Has anybody imported tree cores into the US and can give me some pointers on paperwork? 🌎🧪
Hot Take: pages for submitting reviews for journals should have TWO (and ONLY two) elements: (1) A box to paste the text of the review into. (2) A drop down menu to indicate the recommendation.
NCAR just won in court! A US district judge in Colorado has prohibited NSF from taking #NCAR apart, specifically in spalling off its supercomputing center in Wyoming. storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.us... Our earlier story on this and why it matters: www.nature.com/articles/d41... 🧪

Our PhD student Kennedy Orwa, who studies applications of AI to health care, was hastily deported today to Kenya along with his 13-year-old son without opportunity to speak to legal counsel. King 5 reports that he held a valid visa that was rescinded without explanation.

Drought a huge concern this summer. Palmer drought severity index (PDSI) by state for March 2026 had 6 states with their worst drought on record, with 22 others experiencing a top-10 worst drought. Only Michigan had an above-average lack of drought. From: www.ncei.noaa.gov/access/monit...
