I think the conspiracy is comforting to people -- "a few bad guys did this." The reality -- "electeds, planners, and most of the public believed that the car was the future and rail transit was outdated" is actually more unsettling since it raises the question of what we're getting wrong now.

The "anonymity + armor" effect. The car acts like a mask and a shield at once, both independently lower empathy and raise aggression. Driving demands constant vigilance and quick decisions, keeping drivers in low-grade stress. People who aren't in steel cages need protection from this. #peoplecity

Protection is for when it is needed. Duh. People needs physical protection from distracted operators of heavy machinery who, countless research studies show, need to be contained and corralled for the safety of everyone else. Protected bike lanes everywhere, please. #safety #peoplecity

Most will think this was an unfortunate mistake, but what it was was a thoughtless design decision made by someone who doesn't think at all in their daily work about people who walk and bike, or what the purpose of a sidewalk even is. No civil engineering awards here.

Every time I ferry/walk to work, I’m reminded that Miramichi built this entire stretch of street with a dropped curb and that has, of course, resulted in vehicles parking in the sidewalk. This was preventable.

The past 5 years at Saint John Transit have had some big wins! But we have one big problem catching up with us. More than half our 40' buses are manufactured by a company that closed in 2012. Every province in Canada funds public transit, except New Brunswick. Please read and share with your MLA.

Be the parent who has to drive your kids to everything in 2026 and ask yourself if this is better or worse than when we used to walk to everything and knock on our friend's door when we wanted to hang out.

Grateful for all of the ways El Cerrito city staff are making our streets safer, like this improvement on Liberty at Waldo. Drivers fly down Liberty, a residential street, avoiding higher traffic streets. These bollards should help slow them down and protect people biking and walking.
