The leader tells a lie everyone knows is a lie, and the machinery of the state sets about forcing the rest of us to repeat it—all the way to the felony prosecution of an innocent bystander. trib.al/HlX7AZm
Think Jeanine Pirro Acted Honorably in the Hearn Case? Think Again.
Some gave her credit for belatedly doing the right thing. But she had no choice, and she’s still a disgrace.

This is a story about the President and several of his hand-picked appointees all committing crimes and blatantly lying to the public while stealing public funds and abusing the criminal justice system, but the NYTimes describes the situation like they're recapping a soap opera.
Another example of the problem with the fixation with Trump’s putative emotions: here a story about the Trump administration’s corruption, incompetence, and venality is framed as one about Trump’s “wrath.” www.nytimes.com/2026/08/01/u...
CBS News ran a claim that "thousands of 9/11 victims' families" want Mamdani banned. The petition organizer told a journalist she has no actual list and the 300 figure was just an estimate. CBS News has since corrected its coverage

Why has DSA grown? One argument from this research: not just ideology, but organization. Strong membership plus ongoing and continuous participation in social movements creates credibility, committed volunteers, political skills, and durable electoral capacity. www.niskanencenter.org/inside-the-d...

“The American people picked up about 95% of the costs of those Trump tariffs,” said Sen. Elizabeth Warren. “I just want to know if you … are making even the slightest effort to try and get some of that money back into the pockets of American families?” trib.al/o7Vn218

When I worked in WaPo Opinions in 2017-2018, senior editors specifically told junior editors not to factcheck Marc Thiessen and other MAGA columnists, otherwise they wouldn’t be able to publish anything by them at all, and “we need them for intellectual diversity.”
It’s very telling that opening your publication to MAGA “thought” requires a massive downgrade in quality control.
The framing here is notable: “a concerning sign” … “for the U.S. economy.” Not for “the U.S. health care system.” Not for “people’s health and stability.”
About 24% of U.S. employees stay in unwanted jobs just for health insurance, a report out Wednesday finds. Up significantly since 2021, the uptick in "job lock" is a concerning sign for the U.S. economy. n.pr/4gQIY5E
I encourage you to read more about Benjamin Flowers — the Trump loyalist, anti-civil rights extremist who will be confirmed tomorrow to the 6th Circuit. It should be alarming to everyone that this man, who is 39, will be on the bench for many decades. nominationnotes.substack.com/p/anti-civil...
Anti-civil rights extremist Benjamin Flowers could soon be a federal judge for life
Flowers compared gender-affirming care to the eugenics movement and said the conventional view of birthright citizenship is “wrong.”

Arizona primary results show denialism’s lasting hold on GOP

The NYT obituary of Lindsey Graham makes no mention of his effort to overturn the 2020 election by calling Georgia’s secretary of state to intimidate him into manufacturing votes for Trump. The Times, like all news media, is GOP propaganda erasing Republicans’ history as election deniers
Interesting choice by NYT to publish an op-ed bemoaning America’s projected population decline by a guy who’s massively racist against immigrants and compares IVF to “Nazi eugenics.” The “pronatalists” only want more of a very specific kind of person in this country. It gives the game away.

critically this was the case in 1870 when the 15th amendment was ratified! there is literally no such thing as partisan gerrymandering and manipulation of voting rules in the south outside of the context of “white reactionaries want to neuter black political power”
All the partisan gerrymandering was always (in part) racial gerrymandering, because the parties' politics were always (in part—but large part) about race. So when you tell Southern legislatures "you can do partisan gerrymandering, but no racial gerrymandering," they know it means they can do both.
Worst part: he's maybe the least-bad Trump pick because he's in the traditional 'regulatory capture / nepotism' mold of bad GOP picks. He's a lawyer (Jones Day) for the businesses he's supposed to regulate and a buddy of Don Jr, but maybe not a eugenicist who wants people to die like RFK Jr.
Trump just put him in charge of the FDA. He has no medical background at all. But he does turkey hunt with Don Junior so ok. www.rollingstone.com/politics/pol...
