"extreme heat, fire, droughts displacing > 200000 and killing > 20000 in Europe, happens on a 1.4°C planet. We are inevitably breaching 1.5°C and heading towards 3°C. It will get worse before it potentially gets better (if we urgently change course)" - jrockström www.nytimes.com/2026/07/29/w...

Europe’s Summer of Reckoning Is ‘Just the Beginning’ (Gift Article)

The continent is experiencing some of its biggest fires and highest temperatures ever. Residents are fleeing, leaders are struggling to respond and “it will get worse,” one climate expert said.

Notable: In its 15th 5-Year Plan, China pledges for the first time to "constructively lead the multilateral governance process to address climate change,” so that its "influence, guiding capacity, shaping power and moral appeal in global climate governance will be significantly enhanced."

The language reflects a recent shift from China's previous positioning, when the nation - the world's largest source of greenhouse gas emissions - had described itself in official documents "as a participant, contributor and leader" in global
climate efforts.

So far this year we've had: the warmest winter on record in the mountain west, a record-shattering heat wave in Europe, once in a thousand year rainfall and flooding texas and forest fire smoke blanketing the mid west and the north east. Feels like something's going on with the climate!

I adore you Leon, Egyptologist here, they were built by a largely volunteer force (corvée labor) of 25,000. The builders were very well fed, paid in bread and beer, and received excellent medical care. There was no slavery whatsoever, it is a common misconception.

um, so everyone cheering on egypt in the world cup realizes how the pyramids were built right? but i guess that's a conversation you're not ready to have

Here’s what the air conditioning discourse illuminates: to deal with climate change we need to electrify & we need zero carbon electricity, we also need more electricity- like double or triple what we have. And we need more cooling & cooling equity. There will be folks fighting against all of that.

This discussion puts its finger squarely on one of the two thorniest issues of geoengineering - namely that, to succeed, it would require multidecadal stable and rational governance of the countries and entities involved. How's that going, these days?

A bunch of European AI policy and engineering guys asked me to help out on this project and it's been fascinating and chilling: what happens to the EU if it doesn't step up on AI (in short, economic collapse and vassalage to the US/China) europe2031.ai long but I hope worth it!

Europe 2031 — What getting AI wrong means for us

A five-year scenario about AI and Europe's impending slide into irrelevance, with a 2034 epilogue that describes how the collapse of the European model could have been prevented.

#OE1 I love you guys but please can you stop with cringe fearmongering around cybersecurity and AI? No #Mythos is not a "Hacker-AI". No Mythos cant access every phone on the planet. No, just because some contractors had access for a time doesn't mean "the program" ...
