Group project from the @jdmanthey.bsky.social lab that I led is out in Molecular Ecology! We used whole-genome data to understand Pleistocene forest refugia in central Africa in Yellow-whiskered Greenbul, a species found across most forest habitat in the region: doi.org/10.1111/mec.... 🧵
new paper (my first w/ a Tok Pisin abstract)! our 2024 camera trap record of the rare New Britain Thrush prompted a review of all known observations of the species since its description—a mere 15 total. led by MS student Jason Gregg for the brand-new Journal of Lost Species: doi.org/10.66264/3c8...
At #Botany2026, I was hoping to start recruiting for my lab group. If you are interested in polyploidy and population genetics, please reach out.
Kudos to Forbes for covering this topic—I was interviewed and got to highlight recent work from our group led by Eliza Clark! www.forbes.com/sites/derekn...

grateful to have received the lab's first NSF grant to study cyclical processes of speciation with new theory and tools (applied to Melanesian birds). ad to come, but I'll be looking for a postdoc with computational biology chops—please reach out! (and repost) www.nsf.gov/awardsearch/...

PSA this appears to be Linum perenne given the reverse herkogamy. It’s introduced from Europe and often mistaken for lewisii. Also, Lewis flax is typically not so deep blue, at least in the Boulder area

Thrilled that our new review article on animal hybridization is now up on EcoEvoRxiv! 🎉 Working on this review with @mollyschumer.bsky.social was a blast, and it was such a wonderful opportunity to catch up on all the amazing work in animal hybridization over the last few years!
Excited to share this new pre-print from the fantastic @kelsiehunnicutt.bsky.social! Kelsie put together a thoughtful and thorough review on hybridization in animal evolution: ecoevorxiv.org/repository/v.... She tracks notable shifts in perspectives on the study of hybridization through time.
Wild rice is a perennial, creeping plant. The secret to its perennial growth habit lies in a developmental reversal directed by small RNAs. This image illustrates how combining perennial genes with prostrate growth genes allows cultivated rice to mimic wild rice. Learn more: https://scim.ag/40GOjDb
Spring is arriving, but there's still snow in the forecast! How do late #winter storms affect our migratory #birds? Thanks @elinck.bsky.social @mdcarling.bsky.social for the opportunity to assemble this genome, which will be an important resource for future comparative and pop gen work. Given its close and iconic mutualism with whitebark pine, Clark’s Nutcracker is basically a plant, hence my role in the project
