While 66 countries criminalize homosexuality, since the criminalization of same-sex sexual relations in Niger, only 45 countries impose criminal penalties for both male and female homosexuality, including Senegal. Following the high-profile arrest of Fatou Binetou Gueye—the daughter of homophobic leader Mame Mactar Gueye—on charges of drug trafficking and “unnatural acts” on the night of Monday, July 13, to Tuesday, July 14, it is now the turn of eight young women to make headlines for “unnatural acts,” according to a hearing before a judge at the Pikine Guediawaye courthouse. These arrests underscore that, while previously spared, lesbians are now just as much a target as gay men, following the tightening of laws criminalizing homosexuality in Senegal in late March. As a reminder, since March 2026, consensual same-sex relations in Senegal are punishable by 5 to 10 years in prison, while fines for this type of offense can reach up to 10 million CFA francs—equivalent to 15,000 euros—with no possibility of a reduced sentence or probation. The median salary in Senegal in 2021/2022 was 132 euros, according to the survey on household living conditions.
