#ParshaChat one of the most famous differences from the Exodus version of the ten commandments: in Deuteronomy the sabbath is a remembrance of slavery, not of creation. This is honestly a more meaningful remembrance to me. Slavery feels more tangible than the narrative of creation.

#ParshaChat Often God's presence is treated as this almost (I hate to bring up the bigot but it's the best word for the concept) Lovecraftian eldritchness where none can experience it in its fullness and remain alive and intact.

#ParshaChat I think about how at Sinai the people famously "was seeing the sounds" in a sheer synesthetic experience wherein the voice of God was so palpable it felt visible. But God's Voice is a measure more accessible than God's Face. None can see God and live, but we can, and should, hear God.

I think of feligions as on a spectrum from auditory to visual, with Islam, Judaism, and low-church Calvinism tending towards auditory, while Catholicism and Hinduism tend visual. It's not binary — Hindus have the Vedas & Catholics have chanting, Muslims have ḥajj & Jews have tallitot #ParshaChat
