this week on The Piper Block: howdy sailor uwu 💖 now go hop on dish ocean man, take me by the hand, take me to the land, where we're sitting at an hour wait on the lead and all i see is tickets at 8 CST/9 EST/6 PST on @datafruits.bsky.social (full program / links / more nautical nonsense below!)

There was a very, very brief period in my culinary career where I’d regularly daydream about signing onto a cruise line and slinging dishes on the open seas. There’s something about the idea of living on a boat that still appeals to me now and again; stepping out onto the railing at night and gazing into the vastness, feeling the gentle rocking of the waves as I drift off to sleep.

Did the fact that I can’t swim for shit stand in the way here? That and the labor law violations, yeah. Probably one of the two. Maybe both. Anyways, speaking of bad ocean-related decisions that my gay ass somehow never made, let’s listen to wartime propaganda about joining the navy. I mean, shit, they probably pay better than half the chefs I’ve worked under, and it isn’t like the dishies can sell meth out the back if the back door leads to the fuckin’ Mariana Trench.

(a .gif of the Village People singing "In The Navy", with a caption reading "yvan eht niaj", which is a simpsons reference to that one episode where bart is in a boy band that inadvertently makes subliminal propaganda messages for the US. Navy's recruitment office)

this month on Clippings: part 2 of our diptych on the legacy of the French-turned-British gender rebel Chevaliere d'Eon de Beaumont, as we take a look at French-speaking Brit, Order of the British Empire member, and founder of the Beaumont Society, Alice Purnell coming soon to @assignedmedia.org

A Linux desktop, with three windows visible. On the top is smplayer, playing a downloaded copy of an interview by Christine Burns with Alice Purnell. On the bottom left is a .pdf written by Alice, discussing the history of the Beaumont Society.

And on the bottom right is the column's script in progress. It reads:

# A CLIPPINGS SCRAPBOOK: ALICE PURNELL, O.B.E., AND THE BEAUMONT SOCIETY

A hundred and fifty-five years after the death of the Chevaliere d'Eon de Beaumont, a group of friends--one of whom spoke the Chevaliere's language--would find their own camaraderie.

## Panel 1

London, Soho. A young person finds their way into a shop of ill repute, and finds a copy of a small hand-bound zine on a magazine rack. If you've been reading *Clippings* for long enough, or you know your trans history, you might recognize the name; *Transvestia*, published by Virginia Prince's Full Personality Expression.

A few pages in, and a door opened in that young person's mind. This magazine was written by people like them, for people like them. They hadn't quite had a name for it before, but now they did; and now, they knew they weren't alone.

And, in the mid '60s, Alice -- taking her name from Lewis Caroll's *Alice In Wonderland* -- and three other European members of FPE decided to found their own off-shoot. Somewhat poetically, this French-speaking Brit and her new friends decided to name themselves after a certain France-born Brit, and the Beaumont Society was born."

a scene from the film adaptation of Arsenic And Old Lace, in which some poor sad sappy sucker is about to drink some arsenic laced beverage while two old ladies look on eagerly. the caption reads "mmmmm nummy nummy appel juice *fucking dies*"

annoyingly the first piece from the "Hot Stoves, Danger, Fire And Knives" column (read: recipe walkthrough) i was going to tackle was making two versions of a very bastardized caprese with.... ...grilled greens. lettuce varieties, specifically. you can imagine why i am Not writing about that rn

finally got a record player set up in the studio again for the first time in...god, multiple years at this point. it's not the best sound quality by a long shot but i'm still super stoked to have my records again <3 Jazz Program listeners might recognize that LP up top from last week's program btw!

A old-style record player/cassette/CD cabinet fashioned to look like a box from the '40s, with the slipcase to the LP version of Morgana King's "It's A Quiet Thing" on the top of the cab.

last time i published a book was 2020 so for those of you unaware: this is what BLACKWORK publications usually look like. i named the imprint that for a reason: harsh black and white, hard contrast, single spot color at best. (pardon my old name on some of these covers here)

The cover art to Tabula Rosetta Issue 9, all black save the title and the issue number being in army green. The cover displays a sparrow, crying blood, being strangled by vines, with the inset caption reading "SEND ME BELOW AND I WILL DRAG YOU WITH ME."The cover art to "Portraits: Collected Graphic Essays, Volume 1: 2019-2020", in all black and white. The cover depicts the artist at her drawing board, with the top portion covered in flowers. The cover art to Tabula Rosetta Issue 4, all black save the title and the issue number being in blood red. The cover displays a hand, with blood pouring from the wrist, holding a lily, with a gigantic rose (patterned after the Luther rose, a reference to my LCMS upbringing and the trauma inherent in that) consuming the entire background. The inset caption reads "I AM FOREVER SEARCHING HIGH AND LOW AND THE LILY OF THE VALLEY DOESN'T KNOW".The cover art to the zine, "Dumb Shit 'Straight' Men Have Said To Me On The Internet". The cover art is literally just a screencap of some chaser's OkCupid profile image, heavily cropped for anonymity and with a censor bar over his eyes.

cover lettering's done. not sure if it is in my budget to print the cover in color (spoiler: unlikely if i'm printing it in-house here at BLACKWORK, I have no other publisher lined up at this time, and it isn't my style anyways) but if i did that lettering up top would be in trans pride flag colors

The hand-lettered title to "A Scrapbook Of Us: The First Two Years Of Clippings, 2024-2026". The word "Scrapbook" is shaded in the format of the trans pride flag. Beneath is my name, Piper bly, shaded with a simple dot fade.

been way too long since I've had to cook up one of these "about the author" pages new book, "A Scrapbook Of Us: The First Two Years Of Clippings, 2024-2026" coming soon #wip #selfie #makingcomics #art

A self-portrait in progress, featuring the author with foofy emo hair, a black beanie, and a striped shirt-dress with striped fingerless gloves, smoking her corncob pipe and grinning impishly at the viewer

Above the portrait reads a title that says "ABOUT THE AUTHOR". Below it is a hand-lettered text block paste-up which reads:

"Born just outside Saint Louis, Missouri and saddled with a decidedly incorrect gender assignment and sobriquet shortly after, Piper Bly is a storyteller by trade and a vagabond by nature. At the age of eight, she drew her first comic book and--despite the world's repeated attempts to kick the notion out of her--she's kept on drawin' ever since.

You can find more of her work, and more about her and her creative career, at piperbly.com."

i know that most of the folks who got into my music years ago when i was still playing shows have long since stopped following my work changing my name and my band name probably didn't help lmao but for all of you who were looking forward to it...Mother Tongue Undertow is still coming. i promise

the cover art to the upcoming Cinderella Suicide record "Mother Tongue Undertow". it depicts sunrise on the Mississippi river.

the cover art to Morgana King's "A Taste Of Honey", featuring a redheaded italian woman with a giant spoon of honey in her mouth. the caption reads "ah yes, 1971's "A Taste Of Honey". not to be confused with 1991's "With A Taste Of Honey" or 1964's "With A Taste Of Honey" or what I did to your man last night uwu"

still working on this part of the delay is technical -- effects pedals, getting my tape decks out of storage, finding a place to record vox, etc the rest is just life related. it has been fairly difficult trying to finish what is technically part 2 of this record esp. given *waves hands at world*

the cover art to Ophelia Drowning's "Suicidal", depicting a self portrait of the author in a dark hallway with a hand over her face, holding a chef's knife

this month on @assignedmedia.org : i sit through texts written in the '90s by cis folk about obscure queer historical figures so you don't have to first of a two-parter about the legacy of the swashbuckling gender-transgressor Charlotte d'Éon de Beaumont stay tuned and send smokes, imma need em

An annotated copy of a .pdf of Gary Kates' "Monsieur d’Eon is a Woman" (yes. for some godforsaken reason that is the name of the book). The highlighted section reads "Interpreting d’Eon as a transsexual renders him fundamentally passive. His gender transformation is seen as something that happened to him, the result of a genetic defect or childhood experiences, rather than a process that he freely brought upon himself as a mature adult.".

My sticky note reads simply "bro what lmao"
