@pjnewwest.bsky.social
Mayor of New Westminster, though nothing here is Official City Communications. Go Dumples!
Good to see @aaoakbay.bsky.social moving on with his life, but I’m going to miss him fighting the good fight for housing and active transportation in Oak Bay of all places! He’s one of the good ones! appleton4oakbay.ca/election-2026/
Election 2026 – Andrew Appleton
As we head into the election season, I’m going to take this opportunity to answer the question a lot of people have been asking: Are you running again? The answer is, after much reflection and conversations with family, friends and colleagues, I have decided not to seek re-election as Councillor.

Car crashes are the #1 source of preventable injury and death for Vancouverites, with the most vulnerable road users disproportionately affected. Ken Sim is hyper focused on "public safety," but is road safety on his agenda? 🤔 We speak to @cbcstephenquinn.bsky.social youtu.be/TeemN0rp950

At this point, I only watch Formula 1 to cheer on @brennacgray.bsky.social George Russel Schadenfreude. Today’s race paid off.
Here we go again! Want one of these beauts in your front yard / apartment window to show off your political acumen & good character? Send your digits here: www.communityfirstnw.ca/lawnsigns

Rohan Singh - Egg Ball (Guyanese Cassava-Wrapped Fried Egg)
Egg Ball (Guyanese Cassava-Wrapped Fried Egg) I’ve got a foot in many worlds. Being born in Canada to Trinidadian and Guyanese parents made it a challenge to connect with each culture. For me, food...

When ending their trip Has anyone ever double checked to see that all four doors are locked before they leave?
A few years apart, but depending on your definition of historic? The Montreal Olympics or the Iranian Revolution & hostage crisis. “What's the first historic event you remember?”
The first Gulf War What's the first historic event you remember?
I think the expanded park on the #NewWest riverfront is worth celebrating. So much fun tonight.
Optimist: The cup is half full Pessimist: The cup is half empty Local government: This should satisfy both the people angry about not enough water and the people angry about not enough cup!
Optimist: The cup is half full Pessimist: The cup is half empty Geomorphologist: the water in the cup ran up the sides of the cup to an elevation of 112mm, which is one of highest waves ever recorded. Good thing there were no cruise ships in the cup.
Lots of news right now, and I’m sure we don’t yet know the implications. My gut reaction is that Carney passed an important marshmallow test, but I am nervous of another Davos speech bait-and-switch. Will what comes next serve Canadians, or will it serve Capital? #elbowsUP
The People’s Parks & Play strategic plan includes amenities across #NewWest including the fast-growing downtown where recent work to open up community spaces is met with a commitment to a new multi-purpose recreation space. Read more about People Parks & Play here: Tinyurl.com/PeopleParksPlay
The People Parks & Play strategic plan approved by #NewWest Council is a roadmap for the next phase of Parks&Rec investments starting with the renewal of our outdoor sports courts in Hume, Grimston and Moody parks, and (soon!) our first outdoor covered sports box. tinyurl.com/PeopleParksPlay
Transit Oriented Development! Not just a good idea, it’s the plan! #NewWest
Fun new StatCan dataset that mixes housing starts data with proximity to transit.
Calgary stats, but I’d bet the stats are the same here (alas, ICBC stats are slow to be released and would not include uninsured vehicles - which is why our Vision Zero approach starts with better data collection!)
Cars are killing Calgarian not e-bikes. Another great piece by Cody Littlefield. #Calgary #yycbike
Your reminder that ebikes replace cars not bikes.
From my perspective they produce a lot more carbon than a regular bike. Lower ability to have an actual workout. Where I live Many people ride them at excessive speeds that they do not have the stamina or cycling experience to manage. Some cycle aggressively making regular cycling more of a battle.
"Ultimately, this is a healthcare concern. Ultimately, this is a housing concern and ultimately, this should be regulated at the provincial level.” None of that will stop #NewWest from doing what it can at the local level to support vulnerable residents from the next Heat Dome.
Despite hundreds of deaths in the 2021 heat dome, many B.C. municipalities allow landlords to ban air conditioners. As cities and towns move to prohibit such bans, local politicians say the province must ensure tenants' "right to cool" via @sobittersosweet.bsky.social thenarwhal.ca/bc-renters-e...
People love to complain, but I’ll be damned if I didn’t just walk in off the street and walk out 20 minutes later with a renewed drivers license, even after a weird driver class change. Not even enough waiting time to figure out the queue code!
So proud to open Pier Park West. Mayors Wright and Cote both showed great leadership in re-connecting #NewWest to the Riverfront, it’s an honour to be here and see the legacy continue.
We had some flag raisings over the last few days at @douglascollege.bsky.social & the City of #NewWest as New West Pride launches thier “Extended Cut” Pride Week of great events that mark the Rage-and-Joy dichotomy that is Pride in 2026! 🏳️⚧️ Happy Pride! 🏳️🌈
When we see climate disruption in front of us, it’s not the time to give up on climate action. It’s the time to double down.
