“This is not a dark chapter in Cornell’s history, it’s a morbid pattern… [A]dministrators have allowed the idea that enough ambiguity, enough he-said-she-said, enough familial connections, enough money will allow you to get off scot-free.” This editorial is 🔥🔥🔥🔥.

I think it’s fair to say that the student journalists at Cornell are braver than the news networks who just gave up on their WH pool ban even though CNN is still being denied access. www.cornellsun.com/article/2026...

The Legal Defense Fund is calling for accountability in the investigations of suspicious deaths of Black people across the country. Over the past year, at least 10 Black people have been found hanging from trees, with some deaths ruled suicides that families question. https://bit.ly/3SOrltz

I just learned that reporter Luis Galeano has been detained in Miami by ICE. This is part of wider trend by the US govt to target immigrant reporters, violating core US press freedom principles. Galeano is from Nicaragua & is believed to have a pending asylum case in the US. I will report more ASAP.

It was only when I looked at this fabulous shirt my friends are printing that I realized that the names of the places Drumpf has tried to rename by fiat have, um, something in common. All indigenous. Is anyone talking about this?

“Gulliver is shown a large wooden contraption that allows “the most ignorant person … [to] write books in philosophy, poetry, politics, laws, mathematics, and theology, without the least assistance from genius or study.”♥️♥️♥️ I guess I’m a Swiftie now. www.thedial.world/articles/new...

Jonathan Swift v. AI — The Dial

Three hundred years ago, the satirist warned of a world in which reading and writing are replaced by the flashy simulation of human knowledge. Can he help us fix it?

"Why is revolutionizing college education necessary or desirable? The document does not say. Woe betide anyone who dares question this purportedly apolitical & inevitable development & how it might intersect with our goal of imparting a humanist education to our students." = A question to ask deans

"Before I banned all devices from my lectures, I would walk around the classroom as I spoke, watching my students engage in blatant day trading of cryptocurrency, sports gambling and placing Polymarket bets on everything under the sun." www.thedial.world/articles/new...

I totally get why Lonnie Bunch is leaving the Smithsonian, but I am also very worried and very sad for what may come. All of the nation's history is in peril, and who knows what kind of historian may be coming to lead it under this administration

I almost forgot to post today, but Week 34 of my stitch-the-news daily news diary included: A printer A race car A mailbox A Canadian flag A guitar A pair of eyes A great lake

An embroidered calendar with stitched icons for a news story each day, including:

A printer for the discourse around Trump's aide, Natalie Harp
A race car for Trump's Formula One race in DC
A mailbox for the Supreme Court decision allowing Trump to go ahead with restrictions on mail voting
A Canadian flag for Trump's escalation of the tariff war with our northern neighbor, along with the Prime Minister's not-backing-down response
A guitar for the death of the brilliant singer, songwriter, actress, advocate, and all around good human, Dolly Parton
A pair of eyes for the death of the wickedly funny, bravely independent, and brilliantly irreverent Tim Curry
A great lake for Trump's announcement that he would be renaming Lake Ontario the Lake of America
