For a noir centred on a double-crossed getaway driver who after five years in jail is out to settle scores and get the money he missed out on, Cry Danger has a breezy, easy-going tone. It’s almost a hangout movie with jaunty Dick Powell, his new veteran buddy and an unabashed b-girl pickpocket.

Assuming the BBC show the Goodies episode Kung Fu Kapers (Ecky Thump) in tribute to Bill Oddie, there’ll have to be a health warning, given that one individual died laughing at it.
Turn the Key Softly is a tender, compassionate, atmospheric film about the traps London sets for three women released from prison, which makes the odd decision to pivot in its last quarter to a (very good) noir centred on a man engaged in a burglary and rooftop chase.
