"Bridge name" for trans folx - has anyone heard of this? A temporary name for the stage between one's given name and a permanent new name. Like a single syllable name (after desired alphabets or sounds, like "jae"/ [J] or "kel") that will later extend into a full name ("Jaylin" or "Kelvin").

Where's my fellow Denise? HMU! It didn't occur to me to look up the name's popularity until I realized others considered it as a factor in choosing names. Not really a popular one, apparently "an old lady name" by today's standards. (Source: "The Baby Name Wizard" by Laura Wattenberg) #transnames

What do we mean when we say someone has "changed their name"? Seems pretty straightforward... right? As I intended through my ongoing exploration of trans folks' names, I've already encountered quandaries and nuances and patterns that I hadn't anticipated. Specifically, in asking people to share the story of their names -- whether they have changed their name OR don't want to…

I fucking love trans people. Not only do many of us change our names, but we've made up names for our names. Deadnames, necronyms, origin story, birth names, given names, government names, wallet names, bridge names, etc. Our relationships to our names are complex, destabilizing cisnormative names.
I felt a disconnect from my given name, particularly the nickname my mom chose, well before I had any understanding or language for my gender queerness. I was already trying out alternatives in my diary at age 8.

Workers accuse Advocates for Trans Equality leaders of mismanagement after the organization warned that staff positions could be eliminated.
Sometimes, I worry my hyperfixation on trans names is too small, too niche. Talking names can feel cutesy and fluffy in the face of genocide. And, then, I'm reminded of the self-determination beneath choosing one's own name as a mighty source of power. Names also link us to our history and culture.

the coolest thing about being transgender is getting to a choose name for yourself. that's a really powerful act that a lot of cis people never get to appreciate because they take for granted the name they were given. even cooler is getting to decide multiple because you can just change them.

You know what's fun? Seeing your new name on official documents. The legal name change process is somewhat onerous, but it's absolutely worth it for the trans joy that comes along with it.
One beauty of being trans is that we make the rules for how we express and affirm our gender. A name change isn't required! One is no less trans, their gender no less valid, if they retain their names. (Some can't change their names, btw.)
When people learn Im a trans person who never changed their name, they're like genuinely shook. Like even other trans people cannot believe I didn't change my name.
